The Speech: Race and Barack Obama's 'A More Perfect Union', by T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting

After Senator Barack Obama delivered his celebrated speech, "A More Perfect Union," on March 18, 2008, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd noted that only Barack Obama "could alchemize a nuanced 40-minute speech on race into must-see YouTube viewing for 20-year-olds." Pundits established the speech's historical eminence with comparisons to Abraham Lincoln's "A House Divided" and Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream." The future president had addressed one of the biggest issues facing his campaign-and our country-with an eloquence and honesty rarely before heard on a national stage.

The Speech brings together a distinguished lineup of writers and thinkers-among them Adam Mansbach, Alice Randall, Connie Schultz, and William Julius Wilson -in a multifaceted exploration of Obama's address. Their original essays examine every aspect of the speech-literary, political, social, and cultural-and are punctuated by Boston Globe columnist Derrick Z. Jackson's reportage on the issue of race in the now historic 2008 campaign. The Speech memorializes and gives full due to a speech that propelled Obama toward the White House, and prompted a nation to evaluate our imperfect but hopeful union.

From Publishers Weekly
A team of scholars and journalists explore the implications of Barack Obama's speech A More Perfect Union, given in the heat of the 2008 primary campaign, in this volume edited by Sharpley-Whiting (Pimps Up, Hos Down). Written by Obama in response to the media frenzy over statements by his pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, A More Perfect Union addressed the enduring legacy of slavery and racism and instantly entered the canon of great American oratory. The contributors use the speech as a starting point to examine the divide between civil rights–era activism (and activists) and the politics of a younger generation that has grown up in its shadow, as well as the development of black oratory, the meaning of a postracial society, the immigrant experience and divisions between the descendants of American slaves and postcolonial immigrants from the Caribbean, Africa and Latin America. Scholarly without being dry, the book offers a way forward from what has become a stalemate between a color-blind white America that sees racism as a problem solved in the 1960s and a nation of ethnic minorities that experiences daily its structural inequities. Review

“[The Speech] offers answers that are a lot more complex than the unvarnished praise Obama's oration has gotten so far…A rich landscape of opinion on the state of race and Obama's singular relationship to it. Last year, we simply couldn't see these arguments in the heat of the campaign; now they're coming into focus.” -- Los Angeles Times

"The time is right for [this] reconsideration... If we are to take the idea of a national racial discussion seriously, then it's especially urgent for a general readership to encounter eye-opening arguments like theologian Obery M. Hendricks Jr.'s articulate defense of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright... The book's tour de force is language scholar Geneva Smitherman's brilliant close reading of Obama's rhetoric, cadence and tone with reference to the "Black jeremiad tradition." She establishes the speech as a unique expression of Obama's biracial, bicultural identity, grounded in Aristotelian rhetoric and touching deep cultural nerves with both white and black audiences." - Salon, Critic's Pick

A Fair, Wise And Balanced Critique Of An Important Period During President Obama's Initial Presidential Campaign
By The Careful Observer
This book shows the power of the media to misrepresent and how, through manipulation, it can bring unnecessary misery to a person's life, in this case, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Jeremiah Wright had been doing great Church work for many years, with a stellar reputation as a Pastor coming from all sides, a man known for being balanced and tempered. Then, the media got ahold of a sound bite, played it over and over out of its larger context, and did everything that it could to ruin him. President Obama, caught in the crossfire of what was going on, decided to make a speech. In that speech, President Obama balanced a number of very difficult things, remaining loyal to his Pastor, and at the same time, not giving into the character assassination he saw going on. He was honest, diplomatic and wise to a fault in dealing with the issue of race head-on. His speech was simply brilliant and will go down in History as such. This book is a collection of critiques of what happened surrounding that situation. It's fair. It's wise. It's balanced and for all of these things, it becomes a great book for reviewing what happened. For all of those who are Barack Obama fans, there is another book that can add to your store of information about him and complement this one. In Thomas D. Rush's “Reality's Pen: Reflections On Family, History & Culture,” you will find a 1989 account of two private conversations between Rush and Obama. In those conversations, Barack reflects on what he envisions in his romantic future, long before he met Michelle. The account is special, in part, because it contains substance that only Rush and Obama heard. It is also special because the comments were made before Obama became famous between he and another guy who were just normal, everyday guys. The interaction is detailed on page 95 of Rush's book in a piece called “You Never Know Who God Wants You To Meet.” Rush's book can be found right here on Amazon, and the Obama story is just one of the many rich stories from the book.

Powerful Words - 3.5 Stars
By Karie Hoskins
I like very much the idea behind "The Speech: Race and Barack Obama's `A More Perfect Union'". Edited by T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting, this book brings together 15 very different people with very differing views on then Senator Obama's speech of March 18th, 2008. As Omar H. Ali puts it, "The fact is that there are at least as many ways to interpret the words contained within this or any other speech as there are people listening to or reading such words. No single interpretation can capture the entirety of what a particular speaker intends, or all the ways in which their speech is received."

As I read each person's thoughts on that momentous speech, I compared it to my own view. There is a nice balance in this book ranging from extremely favorable opinions to disappointment over a chance missed. The essays are generally written in a very scholarly manner (prompting me to look up a few words) and include a great deal of historical context. I found myself trying to look at the speech through different eyes than my own (which saw the speech as yet another example of our President's intelligence and talent) - which I suppose, was really the point of his words that day.

Was I editing the book, I might have made a few changes, though. First off - I would have let the writers know that the historical context of the speech would be provided at the beginning of the book. Many of them laid the groundwork of what was happening in the country and in the election at that time, and the repetition got tiresome by the third essay or so. Also, I would have either placed the text of the speech at the beginning, so that it was fresh in the reader's mind prior to reading the essays or would have broken the speech up - then grouping the essays that touched on each of those aspects together. (And then put the full text at the end of the book.) I found myself reading some parts of the speech over and over again when quoted in the essays, without having the text as a whole in the background of my thoughts.

It is fascinating, though, to share the same experience with other people whose lives are so different from mine. To know that others - like Alice Randall (as I did) "...first heard The Speech on a car radio. And so it came to me initially as words in air. It came to me as songs often come to me, as disembodied sound that reaches the body with a kind of anonymity that entices one to believe that the voice one hears in one's own."

To see pointed out very important elements that I missed: "At the center of The Speech are three words separating then from now: Not this time. These three words are Obama's victory. Not this time. Repeating this phrase twice and repeating the phrase "This time" six times, Obama begins to break with the past."

For me, the most important there of the speech was that "It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper." In our country, where "A recent study conducted at Princeton University revealed that a white felon stands an equal chance of being granted a job interview as a black applicant with no criminal record,". Because we finally have a black president does not mean that all the inequalities have been swept away. But it also does NOT mean, as pointed out by Obama, that the fulfillment of his dream to become president means that whites have lost their chance to succeed as he has.

This speech, this man, is a game changer for our country...in I believe, a wonderful way. Because of who he is, because of what he has done, because of what he will lead this country to become. Closing with an anecdote from Obama's senior adviser, David Axelrod:

"Obama wrote in the middle of the night for the two nights before this speech. At two A.M on the day of the speech, Axelrod woke up to see that Obama had sent it to him on his BlackBerry. Axelrod read it and e-mailed Obama back to say, "This is why you should be president."

Should be and is.

Rhetorical Trope with feelings, But not a solution to the Race Problem
By Herbert L Calhoun
These pieces in this edited volume, cover the Obama speech on race, its motivations, its intent, its value as a political document, as a model for framing poverty, and as the introduction or a gateway to a post racial America, etc. What I was hoping for was a thorough paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of it. But that probably would have resulted in dull reading. As a result, I decided to perform my own analysis to place along side that of these very talented authors.

My main concern was how Mr. Obama would address the responsibilities for racism in America. And in this regard, in the fourth paragraph of the speech, he clearly seems to place the responsibility for making the nation a more perfect union entirely on the backs of the victims of injustice. He appears to be blind to the fact that an even greater responsibility should lie on the backs of those, who by resisting social changes they don't like, actually violate the laws of the land and thus are undoubtedly and are incontrovertibly the cause of racial injustice in America.

Those who have suffered injustices through overt violations of U.S. laws, by the majority population, according to Mr. Obama's formulation, must go into the streets to demonstrate, protest and struggle to secure rights that have already been granted them by the U.S. Constitution, but which are then willfully and illegally denied them through resistance by those who choose not to obey the laws of the land against racial discrimination? Obama's one-sided appeal for responsibility strikes me as being, at the very least, "bass ackwards? Especially since in paragraph six he also places an "unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people (meaning of course the majority white population) ." Indeed if these people are as decent as he imagines them to be, why then are they given a "free pass" from their own civic responsibility of not having a right to actively and passively resist laws and social arrangements designed to break down the barriers of racial discriminationn and that are otherwise protected by the U.S. Constitution? And furthermore, since we are a law abiding nation, why are those who resist laws they happen to disagree with (such as laws that call for racial fairness), not also called upon to cease and desist their unlawful behavior? Why indeed are laws which prohibit such resistance, rarely invoke on the side of the victims of injustice and against the perpetrators? Were this to be done, would the need for demonstrations, protests and struggles simply disappear?

Without addressing the underlying cause of injustice, by a majority that willfully chooses to disobey the laws of the land, can the U.S. really call itself a true law abiding nation? The point being, is there really an objective basis for Mr. Obama's "unyielding faith," in the goodness of the American people when it comes to the issue of race? Or is this, as one of the author's has suggested, just a convenient rhetoric trope of an idealized "racially fair America" that does not (and has never) existed except in our own collective imagination?

In paragraph 15-18, Mr. Obama dismisses Reverend Wright's alternative view of America as being endemically racist by suggesting that Wright elevates what is wrong with America above what is right about it. Yet, a careful analysis of Wright's ranting seems to be an attempt to shift at least some of the blame and responsibility back where it belongs: to those who illegally resist respecting the laws of the land. It is after all this resistance that is the very cause of injustice and inequality.

Mr. Obama spends an inordinate amount of space rebuking and "distancing" himself from Reverend Wright and Reverend Wright's comments, but he never attempts to address the underlying cause of Wright's (and most blacks in America), vitriol: "white racism from sea to shining sea." In paragraphs 28 and following, he talks about the history of racism as if it were an abstraction from a bygone era? There is no identification of the racial group or return address of perpetrators: Jim Crow, segregation, and the brutality of slavery just happened? And its cross-generational legacy is just a cruel historical fait accompli for the victims and an enduring passive but illicit windfall for the perpetrators.

In fairness, Obama does end his review of the history of racism by finally calling the white community to account in paragraph 43. He asks them to acknowledge that blacks who cry racism, may not all be crazy, but are most likely reacting to objective conditions of discrimination extant in U.S. culture and society. But the way he proposes to impose responsibilities on these whites, the perpetrators of, or passive recipients of, cross-generational illicit race-based bounties, is not by appealing to the racial hatred in their hearts, or for having them give up their acquired advantages and illicit loot, but by calling on them to help fix and invest in (mostly still segregated) schools, by enforcing civil rights laws (that are acted and re-enacted every generation with the same results) and by ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system (which is a world-class embarrassment and continues to get worse).

In the end everything is resolved by the perennial call for unity. For obvious reasons, it can only be of the "papered-over" kind, since in a nation that is already Balkanized to the maximum, the hope for real unity is very nearly an impossibility. And the reason real unity can never happen in America is that "passive white racism" remains below the radar, yet it is much more insidious than Reverend Wright's incendiary rhetoric. Three stars.

The Sophia of Jesus Christ and Eugnostos the Blessed: The Divine Feminine and The Gnostic Way, by Joseph Lumpkin

Presented here are the Books of "The Sophia of Jesus Christ" (also called "The Wisdom of Jesus Christ") and "Eugnostos the Blessed" with extensive commentary on the ancient texts, Gnosticism, and the Divine Feminine.

Gnosticism holds a special and unique place in the formation of Christianity. The theology presented by the Gnostics demands a balance of male and female "energies". In this book we will explore Gnosticism and the Divine Feminine through the lens of two great Gnostic texts. We will see the influence of Gnosticism and how their idea of the Divine Feminine effected orthodox or mainline Christianity.

The treatise of "Eugnostos the Blessed" (50-150 A.D.) and the gospel called, "The Sophia of Jesus Christ", (50-200 A.D.) are presented together in a single volume, due to their close and undeniable connection. In fact, one borrowed heavily from the other. "The Sophia of Jesus Christ", also called "The Wisdom of Jesus Christ", seems to be a later and Christianized version of "Eugnostos the Blessed", a non-Christian Gnostic text.

Gnosticism is complex and deserves explanation in order to better understand the texts. Extensive history, background and commentary are provided in order to reveal the inner working of Gnosticism, the place of women in their theology, and how Gnosticism influenced the Christianity of today.

From the Publisher
This revision continues to present the fundamentals of transient circuit and system analysis with an emphasis on the Laplace transform and pole-zero approach for analyzing and interpreting problems.

From the Back Cover

This revised edition is written for an advanced undergraduate circuit analysis course in an applied engineering or an upper-division engineering technology curriculum. This book can also serve as a reference for engineers and technologists.

The first four chapters are devoted to time-domain considerations. Chapter 5 through 8 present transform-domain considerations. Chapter 9 deals with Fourier analysis and the concept of spectrum. Both the Fourier series and the Fourier transform are covered. Chapter 10 provides an introduction to discrete-time systems.

The Electronics Workbench™ (EWB) examples found in the last section of most chapters have been modified to work with Multisim, the newest version of EWB. The text also contains a number of MATLAB™ examples. As in the case of Multisim, coverage is optional and is not a prerequisite to other topics within the text. Appendix E provides a brief introduction to MATLAB to familiarize readers with the program the program.

A free Instructor's Manual (ISBN0-13-060250-7) is available to instructors.

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

As in the case of the first four editions, this fifth edition was designed for an advanced undergraduate circuit analysis course in an applied engineering curriculum or in an upper-division engineering technology curriculum. The book could also serve as a self-study reference for engineers and technologists.

The reader should be familiar, with the fundamentals of differential and integral calculus and with basic do circuit analysis techniques. It is anticipated that most readers will also be familiar with steady-state ac circuit theory. However, the latter condition is not a necessity, since a major portion of the book may be mastered without a background in ac circuits.

The first four chapters are devoted to time-domain considerations. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the general philosophy of the book. The fundamentals of waveform analysis are presented in Chapter 2. The reader should find that his or her knowledge of differentiation and integration will be strengthened after mastering this chapter, particularly in regard to graphical techniques. The voltage-current relationships for each of the basic circuit elements are explained in Chapter 3 and developed fully in Chapter 4.

The next four chapters are devoted to transform-domain considerations. Following a detailed development of the Laplace transform and inverse transform in Chapter 5, the use of transform techniques in obtaining complete circuit responses is presented in Chapter 6. In Chapter 7, the emphasis shifts to the system concepts of circuit theory. Among the topics considered are transfer functions, impedance functions, convolution, and stability. In Chapter 8, sinusoidal steady-state techniques are developed and compared with Laplace transform techniques. The frequency response concept is developed, and the use of pole-zero methods for obtaining frequency response plots is explored.

Chapter 9 deals with Fourier analysis and the concept of a spectrum. Both the Fourier series and the Fourier transform are covered.

Chapter 10 provides an introduction to discrete-time systems. Topics covered include sampled signals, the sampling theorem, difference equations, and the z-transform. This chapter represents a modern and timely supplement to the continuous-time material predominant through the remainder of the book.

Among the topics presented in the appendices are complex algebra and several proofs of transform theorems. These topics may be considered at the discretion of the instructor whenever possible.

Depending on the nature of the course and the background of the students, there is reasonable latitude available on the depth and rigor with which the material in this book can be presented. On the one hand, the derivation and formulation of the principles involved can be emphasized. On the other hand, the use of principles as tools for solving and interpreting practical problems can be emphasized, with only casual consideration of the mathematical fine points. Any suitable compromise between these limits should be possible.

Multisim and MATLAB

The circuit analysis program featured in the previous edition of the text was Electronics Workbench. This program has now evolved into a new product with the name Multisim. The result has been a continued improvement in the product. It served as the basis fir computer-aided circuit analysis in this fifth edition. The Electronics Workbench examples of the fourth edition have been modified to work with Multisim and all instructions have been modified accordingly. This coverage is optional and is not a prerequisite for other topics within the text.

Multisim continues to be one of the most widely employed Windows-based circuit analysis programs, particularly in educational institutions. Its success is based largely on the fact that it is very user-friendly and is quickly learned by computer-literate students.

The text contains several dozen Multisim examples, located near the end of each chapter. Most of these Multisim examples are based on previous chapter examples that had been analyzed earlier by standard circuit analysis methods. Thus, the reader can compare results from the two drastically different approaches. Readers with no background in Multisim should carefully study Appendix D before considering the Multisim examples in the text.

The text also contains a number of MATLAB examples. As in the case of Multisim, this coverage is optional and is not a prerequisite for other topics within the text. MATLAB examples are also located near the end of the appropriate chapters.

MATLAB is one of the most popular software packages for performing mathematical operations. It has a wide variety of capabilities, including operations in algebra, calculus, differential equations, and matrix manipulations. Some of the most useful operations that support circuit analysis will be illustrated.

Appendix E, providing a brief introduction to MATLAB, has been added for the benefit of readers who are unfamiliar with the program. Most of the programming details, however, are provided in the MATLAB examples throughout the text.

Got this used and it was in great condition. Good book on the topic
By Hello
Got this used and it was in great condition. Good book on the topic, easy to read. I don't understand why these books don't give solutions to all the problems...seems to be something all text books have done from the beginning of time. That's silly.

Mystery unveiled: making money work twice as hard for you
By Peter Sorrells
This book is a short read with concentrated information on different types of life insurance policies. Better than that, it shows creative (even surprising!) ways to use certain types of insurance to build tax-deferred or tax-free growth of your money. It describes ways to enhance your life at every stage of adulthood. In other words, using the policy for financial benefit while you are alive, not only for a payment to your family at the time of your passing. Hence the word "live" in the title. It's a complicated subject, but the author breaks down the concepts into understandable chunks and explains each step. She also describes the different actions and benefits to take at each stage of life: 20-40, 41-50, and 50+. I was particularly intrigued by learning how to use one kind of policy, in conjunction with specific financing on a home, to live a more fun and comfortable life after retirement - and still leave my heirs with more assets and no debt! If Kim ever writes a revised edition, I'd sure like to see some graphics to help demonstrate the concepts but this is a great expose` on the principles as-is.

Very Useful Book
By R. S. Mattei
Kim Butler's book is fabulous. She clearly presents you with the little known fact that "the first Beneficiary of your Life Insurance policy should be YOU." It is likely the most under-utilized opportunity in personal finance to increase your cash flow. You read that right: you don't have to die to use properly-designed Life Insurance! It's not about just borrowing from your cash value, you don't sell your policy to someone; none of that here. She clearly gives you some tools and concepts you'll want when you look to utilize a non-traditional financial planning approach, hopefully very soon.

Thank God for Prosperity Economic teachers like Kim. Her leadership and this book are a first for consumers, because they are based on truth concepts. I've known of Kim for years, and I've verified these concepts over the last 25+ years, even longer than I've known her.

The book is easy for a consumer to read and understand (It is NOT easy for a traditional financial planner, so don't bother). She divides LYLI into 3 sections: 1. How to Use Your Cash Value, 2. How to Use Your Death Benefit While You Are Living, and 3. A very clear Glossary. Within this framework, she describes 5 phases of owning life insurance from the very first year with real-world examples: The Start-up Phase, Years 1-5; The Leverage Opportunity Phase years: 6-30; Spending Other Assets Phase: Years 20 - 40; Using the Death Benefit Phase (Years 41 - 50); and finally the 5th Phase, Setting Up the Family Bank ( Years 51+). This is an excellent, common-sense approach to personal finance, and it could not come at a better time for you.

Remember: The "first Beneficiary of your Life Insurance policy should be YOU."

People who own, utilize, and live their life insurance love it. Enjoy this book

Bobby

"Make Habermas Great Again"
By A
This is Habermas's best book. In my humble view, I think KHI is one of the most important works of the twentieth century. The only reason it does not get the attention it deserves is that Habermas moved away from it in the 1970's. In KHI, he analyzes four major developmental thinkers of the last few hundred years -- Kant, Hegel, Marx and Freud -- within a hermeneutical, yet systematic, framework for a social theory. As Kortian puts it in the "Introduction" to Metacritique (a study of KHI), this book is "an attempt to rewrite the Phenomenology of Spirit," but without Hegel's postulate of absolute identity. For those philosophers who, like myself, remain unconvinced by Habermas's post-KHI turn toward Kant, cognitive-developmental psychology and formal pragmatics, this book is an absolute gem.

A transcendental-pragmatic epistemology and critical theory...
By Brian C.
This is a very interesting book and well worth reading. Habermas's primary thesis is that knowledge is transcendentally grounded in various interests which have a natural basis in our evolutionary history and an historical basis in our cultural, social and economic history.

Habermas sees the empirical, natural sciences as being transcendentally grounded in our interest in the technical control of nature. Our interest in increasing our technical control over the natural world in our effort to survive determines the way in which nature is objectified in the natural sciences and the form that our scientific theories take (hypothetico-deductive connections of propositions, which permit the deduction of law-like hypotheses with empirical content, pg308) as well as the way those theories are tested and corroborated (the experimental method which is based on scientists ability to physically reproduce the same phenomena given identical initial conditions). There are definitely echoes of Nietzsche and Heidegger here in the notion that science is ultimately a means for technical control as opposed to pure theoretical speculation. The interest in technical control finds its ground in 'work' which, as Marx argued, is the process whereby the species reproduces itself in a physical sense. The process of work provides a feedback loop between theory and pragmatic testing (what works survives; what does not work is abandoned) which is similar to the method of the natural sciences and which leads to technological advance. Habermas follows Marx in the sense that it is no longer a transcendental consciousness determining the form of objectivity in the theoretical sciences but is rather "the concrete human species, which reproduces its life under natural conditions," a process which "takes the form of processes of social labor" (pg27). The knowledge generated in this process takes on external existence as a productive force thereby altering both nature and the laboring subject (pg36) and this accounts for progress. Habermas criticizes Marx, however, for reducing the "self-generating act of the human species to labor" (pg42). Habermas believes that what Marx called the relations of production (in distinction to the forces of production) are equally important and equally generative of knowledge constituting interests.

Habermas sees the human sciences as being transcendentally grounded in our interest "in the preservation and expansion of the intersubjectivity of possible action-orienting mutual understanding" (pg310). The form of understanding in the human sciences cannot be understood on the model of technical control but must be understood on the model of the intersubjective interest in achieving mutual understanding. In everyday life we are usually able to communicate with relatively few problems. This is especially true when we are dealing with people who speak the same language we do and have similar cultural backgrounds. There are times, however, when we run into problems communicating our intended meaning and an effort of translation is necessary in some form. Habermas sees the human sciences, which attempt to understand historical texts in foreign languages from vanished cultures, as grounded in a similar problem of understanding. It is our interest in reaching mutual understanding which guides this research and determines the correct methodology for the human sciences (hermeneutics). It is very important for Habermas to realize that the human sciences are grounded in a different interest than the natural empirical sciences. One of Habermas's goals in this work is to overcome the dominance of the natural sciences in epistemology (especially positivism) and he does this by grounding different sciences in different interests which determine the object domain of the sciences in a transcendental fashion.

The third and final interest which Habermas sees as constitutive of a form of knowledge is our interest in emancipation through critique (or self-reflection). Habermas believes that psychoanalysis as developed by Freud is a paradigmatic example of this form of knowledge (as is the critique of ideology inaugurated by Marx). Habermas offers a very interesting interpretation of Freud in the final sections of this work in which he argues that Freud's metapsychological concepts (the topology of the psyche in terms of the ego, id, and superego) can only be understood correctly from the standpoint of the analytic situation and the attempt to overcome deformed language or communication and behavioral pathology. Habermas believes that Freud, believing that he was introducing the methods of the natural sciences into the realm of the psyche, misunderstood the peculiar nature of his own theories and so misconceived his theories in an objectivist fashion. Habermas sees the peculiarity of psychoanalysis as residing in the interest which grounds it transcendentally and, therefore, believes it is a mistake to attempt to introduce the methodology of the natural sciences into psychoanalysis (a nice rejoinder to all of those who criticize psychoanalysis for being unscientific). Psychoanalysis has its own form of understanding grounded in its own interest in human emancipation. Habermas also attempts to combine Freud and Marx in the the final sections in this work. Freud believed that civilization rested on the compulsion to work and the renunciation of instinct. This renunciation of instinct led to utopian fantasies and collective neuroses which to a certain extent were inescapable being determined by natural conditions of survival. These necessities, however, are enforced in the form of institutions (Marx's superstructure and relations of production) which to a certain extent have a life of their own and inflict the necessary renunciations of civilization unequally (class structure). Habermas writes, "If technical progress opens up the objective possibility of reducing socially necessary repression below the level of institutionally demanded repression, this utopian content [the utopian content generated from the renunciation of instinct] can be freed from its fusion with the delusory, ideological components of culture that have been fashioned into legitimations of authority and be converted into a critique of power structures that have become historically obsolete. It is in this context that class struggle has its place" (pg280). Class struggle has its place here precisely because instinctual renunciations fall most heavily on the lower classes who are the ones who have an interest in institutional change once technology has advanced to a point to make the institutionally demanded level of repression unnecessary. One can see clearly here how Habermas's transcendental-pragmatic epistemology based in human interests provides the grounds for his critical theory. The final section of the work is, in my opinion, the most interesting and thought-provoking.

I should also make a few general points. First, even if one finds oneself disagreeing with some (or all) of Habermas's fundamental theses (I am not sure that the interest in technical control can fully determine the natural sciences since some modern scientific theories, like those of Ilya Prigogine and Stuart Kauffman, specifically deny the predictability of the future and, hence, the possibility of technical control) there is still a great deal that I think will still be of interest in this book. Habermas constructs this book as a series of chapters each dealing with a major figure (the figures dealt with are: Hegel, Marx, Comte, Mach, Peirce, Dewey, Kant, Fichte, Freud, and Nietzsche). Habermas has some very interesting things to say about all of these thinkers and so anyone who has any interest in any of them will certainly find what Habermas has to say interesting. Also, Habermas is often criticized for his difficult writing style. Personally I actually thought this work was quite lucid. It is certainly difficult and probably requires some prior familiarity with the figures being discussed on the part of the reader but I think Habermas's writing style (at least in this work) compares very favorably with most Continental philosophers.

All in all I would give this book my very highest recommendation! It is truly one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time.

A CRITIQUE OF POSITIVISM AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE RELATION BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST
By Steven H Propp
Jrgen Habermas (born 1929) is a German philosopher and sociologist who is one of the leading figures of the Frankfurt School. He wrote many books, such as The Theory of Communicative Action, Volume 1: Reason and the Rationalization of Society, The Theory of Communicative Action, Volume 2: Lifeworld and System: A Critique of Functionalist Reason, The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, Truth and Justification, The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity, Moral Consciousness and Communicative Action, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1968 book, “I am undertaking a historically oriented attempt to reconstruct the prehistory of modern positivism with the systematic intention of analyzing the connections between knowledge and human interests… The analysis of the connection between knowledge and interest should support the assertion that a radical critique of knowledge is possible only as social theory. This idea is implicit in Marx’s theory of society, even though it cannot be gathered from the self-understanding of Marx or of Marxism. Nevertheless I have not gone into the objective context in which the development of philosophy from Hegel to Nietzsche took place. Instead I have limited myself to following immanently the movement of thought.”

He asserts, “Positivism marks the end of the theory of knowledge. In its place emerges the philosophy of science. Transcendental-logical inquiry into the conditions of possible knowledge aimed as well at explicating the meaning of knowledge as such. Positivism cuts off this inquiry, which it conceives as having become meaningless in virtue of the fact of the modern sciences. Knowledge is implicitly defined by the achievement of the sciences. Hence transcendental inquiry into the conditions of possible knowledge can be meaningfully pursued only in the form of methodological inquiry into the rules for the construction and corroboration of scientific theories.” (Pg. 67)

He points out, “The problem remains. On scientistic presuppositions, positivism suspends the theory of knowledge in favor of a philosophy of the sciences, because it measures knowledge only in terms of the actual achievements of the sciences. How, then, prior to all science, can the doctrine of elements make statements about the object domain of science as such, if we only obtain information about this domain from science?” (Pg. 88)

He concludes Part Two of this book with the statement, “The systematic cultural sciences establish general theories and yet cannot simply be cut off from the basis of world history. How can the claim to universality that is put forth for their theories be harmonized with their intention of comprehending individuated historical processes? Freud did not take up this question as a methodological question. Yet psychoanalysis, if we comprehend it as a general theory of life-historical self-formative processes, provides an answer to it.” (Pg. 186)

He suggests, “General interpretations can abstractly assert their claim to universal validity because their derivatives are additionally determined by context. Narrative explanations differ from strictly deductive ones in that the events of states of which they assert a causal relation is further defined by their application. Therefore general interpretions do not make possible context-free explanations.” (Pg. 273)

He concludes with the statement, “For the new phase of positivism, Nietzsche seemed to have furnished the proof that the self-reflection of the sciences only leads to the psychologizing of matters that, like matters of logic and methodology, may not be placed on the same level as empirical relations. The ‘self-reflection’ of the sciences could appear as a further example of the naturalistic fallacy… Accordingly, it was believed that all that was necessary was a restoration of the separation in principle of questions of validity from those of genesis. In the process, epistemology, including the theory of knowledge developed immanently out of the logic of the natural and cultural sciences, could be surrendered to the psychology of research. On this basis modern positivism then erected a pure methodology, purged, however, of the really interesting problems.” (Pg. 300)

In the Appendix, he summarizes, “my first thesis is this: The achievements of the transcendental subject have their basis in the natural history of the human species… My second thesis is thus that knowledge equally serves as an instrument and transcends mere self-preservation… My third thesis is thus that knowledge-constitutive interests take form in the medium of work, language, and power… My fourth thesis is thus that in the power of self-reflection, knowledge and interest are one… My fifth thesis is thus that the unity of knowledge and interest proves itself in a dialectic that takes the historical traces of suppressed dialogue and reconstructs what has been suppressed.” (Pg. 312-315)

This book will be of keen interest to those studying Habermas’s thought.
