Primary Phonics: Set 2 is OUTSTANDING!!!
By A Customer
Primary Phonics is a series of books designed to teach children to read. Each book contains a different, positive story and each is 16 pages long. The approach of this series is simple, yet profound: If you teach a child the sounds of the letters in words, then a child can sound out most words himself.
Most beginning reading books start introducing long complicated words, such as "while", "please" and "said" earlier than most children can read them. The theory, is that the children learn these as "sight" words. The problem comes, when a child has too many "sight" words to try and remember. The Primary Phonics readers (set 1) start out with only five sight words: "a", "the", "on", "to" and "and". These are listed on the back cover of each book. The rest of the words in the stories (in set one) are three letters or less and in set two, four letters or less. The first book in set one has only two vowel sounds to learn and 13 consonant sounds. As the books progress, more vowel and consonant sounds are added to this base. The method allows the child, as he reads, to learn and remember the sounds of each letter. By the end of set two, the young reader has progressed to seven sight words, 17 vowel and 17 consonant sounds.
These books have been around for many, many years and have taught many people to read. My mother purchased these books when I was a toddler at the recommendation of a private school teacher. I was "reading", these books at the age of three. This year I have been tutoring a family of homeschooled children, who were severely behind in their studies. Many have ADHD and severe dyslexia and have been labeled as "unteachable". I used this series of books for one boy in particular - a nine year old who could barely say his alphabet when he started. Within just two weeks he was soaring and comfortably reading these books.
There are also corresponding "workbooks" that go along with this series. They are a wonderful addition as well. They aren't necessary to teach reading, but can be helpful in learing to write and spell the words. The illustrations and words are the same as those in the readers, but also teach the children to recoginize the color words (yellow, red, etc...). I highly recommend this series to parents and teachers who want to help their children learn this important skill. They can help children of any age level or with any learning disability, read.

Best Phonic Materials on the Market
By L. M. Keefer
I have taught over a thousand children to read and these are the best phonic materials on the market. I use the accompanying workbook which goes with the series. This series is very sequential with lots of practice. The children love the stories. Use the whole series - begin with set one.

The groundbreaking, serial ebook by New York Times bestselling and award-winning author, Omar Tyree, is now on sale with all 25 chapters for a discounted $9.99, including a recent December 2012 interview with Ni'cola Mitchell.

Omar Tyree, the originator of contemporary “urban classic” novels that have spawned a wave of “urban/street literature,” hits home with Corrupted, a timely and innovative novel all about the dark side of the present-day publishing industry.

In an era where hundreds of aspiring writers play an anxious game of musical chairs to entice a shrinking group of New-York-based book editors to buy their freshly printed manuscripts, the unscrupulous editor, Vincent Biddle reigns.

A popular and proven native of the Bronx, New York, with a residence in Harlem, over the past decade Vincent has hand-picked, edited and positioned thirty-four bestselling books from a dozen celebrated authors, while generating more than two-hundred million dollars in revenue for the Williams & Klein Publishing Group.

Vincent’s rise to power as a senior editor of the company is imminent, but as he rises, so to does his ego, as he pushes and pulls for book sales of his current stable of writers, while remaining on the prowl for new ones.

Enter Natalie Cumberland, a Michigan-based Christian writer on her last good book, while supporting a jobless, philandering and abusive husband; Darlene Krause, an innocent, yet talented, wet-behind-the-ear mixed girl from Denver Colorado, looking for her first deal; DeWayne "Double D" McDonald, an urban street lit writer fresh from the prison cells, who fights to stay afloat in his fiercely competitive street genre; Chelsea Christmas, a highly successful erotica writer who continues to write the seductive heat inspired from her real life bedsheets; and Antonio Martinez, a desperate Puerto Rican writer from New Jersey, who will try just about anything to get in, including trading sexual favors; all mixed in with a cast of competing editors, sexy assistants, public relations divas and the publishing brass, who cut the checks and fire the slack.

Corrrupted is an all out juicy, tell-all book, ripped straight from the reality shows of cable network TV, uncovering a fast-moving two months inside the dark halls of the publishing industry as told with the blunt, piercing honesty that Omar Tyree has been known for.

Very insightful and hopefully truthful look into the publishing industry. I would even have given it five stars but the typos were unbearable to read through. Proofreading is a must!

Disappointed-N-AK
By Donna Williams
The book not being edited was not a good thing for me. It took away from the reading and too many times I had to re-read a sentence in order to understand what was going on. I myself was very disappointed. Omar is one of my favorite authors and my Book Club choice yearly. It was definitely a good discussion but not in the positive this time. Donna-AK

I love Omar tyree but I must say it had lots of errors and it seemed rushed, he developed the characters in such depth all the cliff hangers have led me to believe there will be a sequel " More Corruption"

Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time, by Jeff Sutherland

We live in a world that is broken. For those who believe that there must be a more agile and efficient way for people to get things done, here from Scrum pioneer Jeff Sutherland is a brilliantly discursive, thought-provoking book about the leadership and management process that is changing the way we live.

In the future, historians may look back on human progress and draw a sharp line designating “before Scrum” and “after Scrum.” Scrum is that ground-breaking. It already drives most of the world’s top technology companies. And now it’s starting to spread to every domain where leaders wrestle with complex projects.

If you’ve ever been startled by how fast the world is changing, Scrum is one of the reasons why. Productivity gains of as much as 1200% have been recorded, and there’s no more lucid – or compelling – explainer of Scrum and its bright promise than Jeff Sutherland, the man who put together the first Scrum team more than twenty years ago.

The thorny problem Jeff began tackling back then boils down to this: people are spectacularly bad at doing things with agility and efficiency. Best laid plans go up in smoke. Teams often work at cross purposes to each other. And when the pressure rises, unhappiness soars. Drawing on his experience as a West Point-educated fighter pilot, biometrics expert, early innovator of ATM technology, and V.P. of engineering or CTO at eleven different technology companies, Jeff began challenging those dysfunctional realities, looking for solutions that would have global impact.

In this book you’ll journey to Scrum’s front lines where Jeff’s system of deep accountability, team interaction, and constant iterative improvement is, among other feats, bringing the FBI into the 21st century, perfecting the design of an affordable 140 mile per hour/100 mile per gallon car, helping NPR report fast-moving action in the Middle East, changing the way pharmacists interact with patients, reducing poverty in the Third World, and even helping people plan their weddings and accomplish weekend chores.

Woven with insights from martial arts, judicial decision making, advanced aerial combat, robotics, and many other disciplines, Scrum is consistently riveting. But the most important reason to read this book is that it may just help you achieve what others consider unachievable – whether it be inventing a trailblazing technology, devising a new system of education, pioneering a way to feed the hungry, or, closer to home, a building a foundation for your family to thrive and prosper.

Review

"Full of engaging stories and real-world examples. The project management method known as Scrum may be the most widely deployed productivity tool among high-tech companies. On a mission to put this tool into the hands of the broader business world for the first time, Jeff Sutherland succeeds brilliantly.”
--Eric Ries, New York Times bestselling author of The Lean Startup

"Engaging, persuasive and extremely practical...Scrum provides a simple framework for solving what seem like intractable and complicated work problems. It’s hard to make forward progress when you can’t see your impediments clearly. Sutherland offers a lens to remedy that. Amazingly, this book will not only make your life at work and home easier, but also, better and happier."
--Shawn Achor, New York Times bestselling author of Before Happiness and The Happiness Advantage

"This book contains immensepractical value that could be transformative foryour company. If you have a project that requires people to accomplish, your first act should be to read and be guided by Scrum."
--Stephen Lundin, New York Times bestselling author of Fish: A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Performance

“Scrum is mandatory reading for any leader, whether they’re leading troops on the battlefield or in the marketplace. The challenges of today’s world don’t permit the luxury of slow, inefficient work. Success requires tremendous speed, enormous productivity, and an unwavering commitment to achieving results. In other words success requires Scrum.”
--General Barry McCaffrey

“Jeff Sutherland has written the essence of Scrum for the masses. In this easy-to-read book, which is filled with lively stories, apt metaphors, and illuminating quotes, Jeff has converted all the ‘tacit knowledge’ he has gained -- as a West Point cadet, fighter pilot in Vietnam, Aikido enthusiast, academic, technology expert, and father of Scrum -- into wisdom. This book elevates Scrum from a fix-it tool to a way of life.”
--Hirotaka Takeuchi, Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School

“Jeff Sutherland's book masterfully speaks truth to the political complexities that easily stand in the way of getting a lot of work done in the least amount of time. He lays out a doctrine of simplicity, showing -- with surprising insight -- how to categorize roadblocks, systematize solutions, choose action over prolonged study, and retain the important emotional aspects of work that ground meaningful interactions. The busy professionals who’ll likely be drawn to this book will find not only an effective manual for getting things done but, also, a how-to guide for living a meaningful life.”
--John Maeda, Design Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers

“This extraordinary book shows a new way to simplify your life and work, increase your focus, and get more done in less time than you ever thought possible.”
--Brian Tracy, bestselling author of Eat that Frog and Time Power

"I've used Scrum on projects big and smallthroughout my software career with great success. It's the bestway I knowto manage small teamsand no doubt has applications beyond software. This book cuts through the jargon and pedagogy and gets to the essence of what makes it work."
--Adam Messinger,Chief TechnologyOfficer, Twitter

“Engaging…Sutherland tackles the problem of the perennially late, over-budget project—and actually shows how to solve it.His fascinating examples of rescued projects will change the way you think and act."
--Dorothy Leonard and Walter Swap, authors ofDeep Smarts: How to Cultivate and Transfer Enduring Business Wisdom

“Jeff Sutherland is the master of creating high-performing teams. The subtitle of this book understates Scrum’s impact. If you don’t get three times the results in one-third the time, you aren’t doing it right!”
--Scott Maxwell, Founder & Senior Managing Director, OpenView Venture Partners

“Jeff Sutherland used the common-sense but seldom-applied principles of the quality movement, user-centered design, and lean development to come up with a process that dramatically increases productivity while reducing employees’ frustrations with the typical corporate nonsense. This book is the best description I’ve seen of how this process can work across many industries. Senior leaders should not just read the book—they should do what Sutherland recommends.”
--Jeffrey Pfeffer, Professor, Stanford Business School and c-author of The Knowing-Doing Gap

“Groundbreaking…Will upend people’s assumptions about how productive they can actually be…Here Jeff Sutherland discloses to the non-tech world the elegantly simple process that programmers and Web developers have been using since he invented Scrum, showing how a small, empowered, and dedicated team can deliver significantly higher quality work at a faster pace through introspection, iteration, and adaptation.”
--Michael Mangi, Senior V.P. of Interactive Technology, Social@Ogilvy

“As a warrior-citizen of the United States Army Reserve, co-founder of a software startup, and harried father of teens, I found myself instantly drawn to this eye-opening guide, which suggests how we can balance our vital roles with discipline and joyful diligence.Sutherland’s secret to surmounting professional and personal obstacles is approaching tasks with deliberate attention and a resilient mindset. This book will change the way you do everything. Even better, it will help you feel good in the process. Just read it, and get more done.”
-Arnold V. Strong, CEO of BrightNeighbor.com, and Colonel, US Army Reserve

"This deceptively simple system is the most powerful way I've seen to improve the effectiveness of any team. I started using it with my business and family halfway through reading the book."
-Leo Babauta, creator of Zen Habits

CHAPTER ONE

The Way the World Works Is Broken

Jeff Johnson was pretty sure it wasn’t going to be a good day. On March 3, 2010, the Federal Bureau of Investigation killed its biggest and most ambitious modernization project--the one that was supposed to prevent another 9/11 but that had devolved into one of the biggest software debacles of all time. For more than a decade the FBI had been trying to update its computer system, and it looked as if they would fail. Again. And now it was his baby.

He’d shown up at the FBI seven months earlier, lured there by the new Chief Information Officer, Chad Fulgham, whom he’d worked with at Lehman Brothers. Jeff was Assistant Director of the IT Engineering Division. He had an office on the top floor of the J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown Washington, D.C. It was a big office. It even had a view of the Washington Monument. Little did Jeff know he’d end up in a windowless cinder-block office in the basement for much of the next two years, trying to fix something that everyone believed to be unfixable.

“It was not an easy decision,” Jeff says. He and his boss had decided to declare defeat and kill a program that had already taken nearly a decade and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. By that point, it made more sense to bring the project in-house and do it themselves. “But it needed to be done and done well.”

The project was the long-awaited computer system that would bring the FBI into the modern age. In 2010--the era of Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and Google--the FBI was still filing most of its reports on paper. The system the Bureau used was called the Automated Case Support system. It ran on gigantic mainframe computers that had been state of the art sometime in the eighties. Many special agents didn’t even use it. It was just too cumbersome and too slow in an era of terror attacks and swift-moving criminals.

When an FBI agent wanted to do something--anything, really--from paying an informant to pursuing a terrorist to filing a report on a bank robber, the process wasn’t that different from what it had been thirty years earlier. Johnson describes it this way: “You would write up a document in a word processor and print out three copies. One would be sent up the approval chain. One would be stored locally in case that one got lost. And with the third you’d take a red pen--I’m not kidding, a red pen--and circle the key words for input into the database. You’d index your own report.”

When a request was approved, that paper copy would drift down from upstairs with a number on it. A number written on a piece of paper is how the FBI kept track of all its case files. This method was so antiquated and porous that it was blamed in part for the Bureau’s failure to “connect the dots” that showed various Al Qaeda activists entering the country in the weeks and months before 9/11. One office was suspicious of one person. Another wondered why so many suspicious foreigners were getting flight training. Another had someone on a watch list but never told anyone else. No one in the Bureau ever put it all together.

The 9/11 Commission drilled down after the attack and tried to discover the core reason it was allowed to happen. Analysts, said the Commission, couldn’t get access to the very information they were supposed to analyze. “The poor state of the FBI’s information systems,” reads the report, “meant that such access depended in large part on an analyst’s personal relationships with individuals in the operational units or squads where the information resided.”

Before 9/11, the FBI had never completed an assessment of the overall terrorism threat to the United States. There were a lot of reasons for this, from focus on career advancement to a lack of information sharing. But the report singled out lack of technological sophistication as perhaps the key reason the Bureau failed so dramatically in the days leading up to 9/11. “The FBI’s information systems were woefully inadequate,” the Commission’s report concludes. “The FBI lacked the ability to know what it knew: there was no effective mechanism for capturing or sharing its institutional knowledge.”

When senators started asking the Bureau some uncomfortable questions, the FBI basically said, “Don’t worry, we have a modernization plan already in the works.” The plan was called the Virtual Case File (VCF) system, and it was supposed to change everything. Not letting any crisis go to waste, officials said they only needed another $70 million on top of the $100 million already budgeted for the plan. If you go back and read press reports on VCF at the time, you’ll notice that the words revolutionary and transformation are used liberally.

Three years later, the program was killed. It didn’t work. Not even a little bit. The FBI had spent $170 million in taxpayer money to buy a computer system that would never be used--not a single line of code, or application, or mouse click. The whole thing was an unmitigated disaster. And this wasn’t simply IBM or Microsoft making a mistake. People’s lives were, quite literally, on the line. As Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, then the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told the Washington Post at the time:

We had information that could have stopped 9/11. It was sitting there and was not acted upon. . . . I haven’t seen them correct the problems. . . . We might be in the 22nd century before we get the 21st-century technology.1

It is rather telling that many of the people who were at the FBI when the Virtual Case File disaster happened aren’t there anymore.

In 2005 the FBI announced a new program, Sentinel. This time it would work. This time they’d put in the right safeguards, the right budget procedures, the right controls. They’d learned their lesson. The price tag? A mere $451 million. And it would be fully operational by 2009.

What could possibly go wrong? In March of 2010 the answer landed on Jeff Johnson’s desk. Lockheed Martin, the contractor hired to make the Sentinel system, had already spent $405 million. They’d developed only half of the project, and it was already a year late. An independent analysis estimated it would take another six to eight years to finish the project, and the taxpayers would have to throw in at least another $350 million.

Finding some way around that was Johnson’s problem.

What went wrong and how the situation got fixed are why I’m writing this book. It wasn’t that these weren’t smart people. It wasn’t that the Bureau didn’t have the right personnel in place, or even the right technology. It wasn’t about a work ethic or the right supply of competitive juices.

It was because of the way people were working. The way most people work. The way we all think work has to be done, because that’s the way we were taught to do it.

When you hear what happened, it sounds at first as if it makes sense: the people at Lockheed sat down before they bid on the contract, looked at the requirements, and started planning how to build a system that would do all that. They had lots of intelligent people working for months, figuring out what needed to be done. Then they spent more months planning how to do it. They produced beautiful charts with everything that needed to be accomplished and the time it would take to complete each and every task. Then, with careful color selection, they showed each piece of the project cascading down to the next like a waterfall.

These charts are called Gantt charts, after Henry Gantt, who developed them. With the advent of personal computers in the 1980s making it easy to create these intricate charts--and to make them really complex--they have become works of art. Every single step in a project is laid out in detail. Every milestone. Every delivery date. These charts truly are impressive to behold. The only problem with them is that they are always, always wrong.

Henry Gantt invented his famous charts around 1910. They were first used in World War I by General William Crozier, who was the Chief of Ordnance for the US Army. Anyone who has studied that war knows that efficient organizational capability was not exactly a salient feature. Why a World War I artifact has become the de facto tool used in twenty-first-century project management has never been quite clear to me. We gave up on trench warfare, but somehow the ideas that organized it are still popular.

It’s just so tempting: all the work needed to be done on a massive project laid out for everyone to see. I’ve visited many companies that have people whose only job is to update that Gantt chart every day. The trouble is, once that beautifully elegant plan meets reality, it falls apart. But instead of scrapping the plan, or the way they think about the plan, managers instead hire people to make it look as if the plan is working. Essentially, they’re paying people to lie to them.

This unfortunate pattern echoes those reports the Soviet politburo was getting in the 1980s just before the total collapse of the USSR. A complete mirage. Now as then, the reports become more important than the reality they’re supposed to describe, and if there’s a discrepancy, reality is the problem, not the charts.

When I was a West Point cadet, I slept in Dwight Eisenhower’s old room. At night, the streetlights would reflect off a gold plate on the mantelpiece and sometimes wake me up. dwight d. eisenhower slept here, the plate read. And I’d remember that Eisenhower once observed that planning for combat is important, but as soon as the first shot is fired, your plans go up in smoke. At least he had enough sense not to use a Gantt chart.

So Lockheed presented the FBI with all these lovely charts, and the Bureau signed on. Supposedly, the task was now so well planned out that nothing could go wrong. “Look, it’s in the color-coded, time-stamped, bar-graphed plan.”

Yet when Jeff and his boss, CIO Chief Chad Fulgham, looked at the plan in the spring of 2010, they knew it for what it was, what such charts all are, really: a complete fabrication. When the two men started to look at actual development and actual deliverables, they realized the problem was beyond fixing. New defects in the software were being discovered faster than old ones were being fixed.

Chad told the Department of Justice Inspector General that they could complete the Sentinel project by bringing development in-house, cutting the number of developers, and that, by doing so, they’d deliver the most challenging half of the project in less than a fifth of the time with less than a tenth of the amount budgeted. The skepticism in the usually dry IG reports to Congress is palpable. In the October 2010 report, after laying out their nine points of concern with the proposal, the IG watchdogs conclude: “In sum, we have significant concerns and questions about the ability of this new approach to complete the Sentinel project within budget, in a timely fashion, and with similar functionality. . . .”2

A New Way of Thinking

This new approach is called “Scrum.” I created it twenty years ago. Now it is the only way proven to help projects like these. There are two ways of doing things: the old “Waterfall” method that wastes hundreds of millions of dollars and often doesn’t deliver anything, or the new way, which, with fewer people and in less time, can deliver more stuff with higher quality at lower cost. I know it sounds too good to be true, but the proof is in the results. It works.

Two decades ago I was desperate. I needed a new way of thinking about work. And through tons of research and experimentation and looking over past data I realized we all needed a new way of organizing human endeavor. None of it is rocket science; it’s all been talked about before. There are studies going back to World War II that lay out some of the better ways that people work. But for some reason people never really put together all the pieces. Over the past two decades I’ve tried to do just that, and now this methodology has become ubiquitous in the first field I applied it to, software development. At giants such as Google, Amazon, and Salesforce.com, and at small start-ups you haven’t heard of yet, this framework has radically shifted how people get things done.

The reason this framework works is simple. I looked at how people actually work, rather than how they say they work. I looked at research done over decades and at best practices in companies all over the world, and I looked deeply at the best teams within those companies. What made them superior? What made them different? Why do some teams achieve greatness and others mediocrity?

For reasons I’ll get into further in future chapters, I called this framework for team performance “Scrum.” The term comes from the game of rugby, and it refers to the way a team works together to move the ball down the field. Careful alignment, unity of purpose, and clarity of goal come together. It’s the perfect metaphor for what I want teams to do.

Traditionally, management wants two things on any project: control and predictability. This leads to vast numbers of documents and graphs and charts, just like at Lockheed. Months of effort go into planning every detail, so there will be no mistakes, no cost overruns, and things will be delivered on schedule.

The problem is that the rosy scenario never actually unfolds. All that effort poured into planning, trying to restrict change, trying to know the unknowable is wasted. Every project involves discovery of problems and bursts of inspiration. Trying to restrict a human endeavor of any scope to color-coded charts and graphs is foolish and doomed to failure. It’s not how people work, and it’s not how projects progress. It’s not how ideas reach fruition or how great things are made.

Instead, it leads to frustrated people not getting what they want. Projects are delayed, come in over budget, and, in too many cases, end in abject failure. This is especially true for teams involved in the creative work of crafting something new. Most of the time, management won’t learn of the glide path toward failure until millions of dollars and thousands of hours have been invested for naught.

Scrum asks why it takes so long and so much effort to do stuff, and why we’re so bad at figuring out how long and how much effort things will take. The cathedral at Chartres took fifty-seven years to build. It’s a safe bet that at the beginning of the project the stonemasons looked at the bishop and said, “Twenty years, max. Probably be done in fifteen.”

Inspiration for Applying Scrum
By Steve Berczuk
The first thing to know is that this isn't a detailed guide to Scrum practices, though there is a summary of the key practices in an appendix. Since there are lots of guides to Scrum at the practices at varying levels of details, having more about what the practices are would not add a lot of value. This book does inform you about how scrum works by helping you to understand the value of Scrum through stories of Scrum in use in various domains, and not just software.. The book is full of war stories (both literally and figuratively), and Sutherland is clearly proud of how he, his family, and organizations he has worked with, have applied scrum. Reading this book will help energize you to use Scrum to help your team succeed. This is not the only book on Scum you need. But if you want motivation to explore more about Scrum, or if you have been practicing Scrum for a while and are looking for renewed inspiration, give this book a read.

Why Scrum?
By C. Eggert
Many Scrum books discuss the "how". This book focuses on the "why". I think it's very important to understand the "why" before trying to worry about the "how", so if you're new to Scrum and are thinking about diving straight into a book discussing the processes, I recommend taking a step back and reading something like this to understand where Scrum came from, what problems it is designed to solve, and how it is applicable to your situation, if at all.

It gets a little over-ambitious towards the end, and tends to view Scrum as a silver bullet, which it is not, but the discussion in the first half of the book is great.

Great book to get you excited about Scrum
By John Price
This is a great overview of Scrum and its power and simplicity when applied in the real world; not just in software teams but in charity work, government and education contexts. I've been a Scrum Master, developer, trainer, and coach for 10 years and I found it compelling. After reading some of the other Amazon reviews, I'd like to set some expectations for anyone thinking of reading it. What it isn't:

* A detailed Scrum manual for software teams. There's a short overview in the appendix, but this material is covered in plenty of other places, such as the Scrum Guide at (...), or the excellent Essential Scrum by Ken Rubin and the series of related Addison-Wesley books.
* A guide to troubleshooting Scrum or resolving common pitfalls in Scrum software teams. There's nothing here about handling unruly Product Owners, or whether SAFe is an appropriate extension for your company.

What it is:

* A fantastic, story-driven overview of how Scrum came to be, real-world situations where it has turned projects around, and why you should consider adopting it. If you are a C-level executive or other leader who wants to be "sold" on all this Scrum/agile/lean stuff you've heard about, read this. Note the endorsement by Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup. The two books are good companions and written for a similar audience.
* For current Scrum practitioners, a fun read and refresher on why we're doing this thing called Scrum. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of backlog refinement, shipping increments and handling team impediments and forget about the spirit of the whole thing. Scrum is about getting out of the way of teams and letting them deliver above and beyond what's possible in command-and-control organizations.

Bottom line: This is a great companion book to others that explain Scrum in more detail, but it's more about the ideas behind it and the exciting possibilities it offers for people working on projects anywhere.

The Environmental Imagination: Technics and Poetics of the Architectural EnvironmentFrom Taylor & Francis

This title, from a well-regarded and established expert, explores the changing relationship between the poetic intentions and technical means of environmental design in architecture. Working thematically and chronologically from the eighteenth century to the present day, these essays reach beyond the narrow conventional view of the purely technical to encompass the poetics of architecture, redefining the historiography of environmental design.

Through an assessment of the works of several leading figures throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Hawkes deftly shows the growth of environmental awareness and adds a consideration of the qualitative dimension of the environment to the existing, primarily technological, narratives. Essays on earlier buildings highlight the response of pioneering architects to the ‘new’ technologies of mechanical services and their influence on the form of buildings, while the late twentieth-century designis explored in particular depth to illustrate individual strands of the environmental diversity of modern practice.

... Robert Morrissey is my go to reference book for fantastic, tips
By Industryholding
iPhoneography PRO by Robert Morrissey is my go to reference book for fantastic, tips, tricks, and sophisticated techniques to apply to my everyday use for the camera in my iPhone. The iPhone has become my daily carry when it comes to photography and has proved to becom an invaluable addition to my collection of camera gear. Knowing asa much as possible about gear as a photographer is paramount, the iPhone is no exception.

By utilizing the techniques laid out in the book, I can capture photo opportunities with complete confidence, that they will not be crap produced on some apple product, rather, I can capture, edit and print all with in minutes, and make the pictures look amazing as well. The book explains the benfits of specific apps, workflow and editing. There are even some lighting techniques explained as well!

As a professional photographer, iPhoneography PRO is a great addition to my collection of resources. I even keep it out on the coffee table to be able to open it up and learn something when I'm doing nothing on my couch.

The book is full of pictures that made me second guess if they were really shot with an iPhone. They all are and look great.

This book is for the beginning photographer who wants to gain a simple to advanced understanding of photography with modern tools, and for the proffessional who wants to take full advantage of all the arrows in the quiver and learn some no things along the way.

Great tips for personal store pics
By Beth D.
I became very interested in this book to help me improve the photos I take of my handmade Tree of Life pendants. I was never able to take photos that really showed the vibrant colors or intricate details in my pendants, and I felt that it was hurting my sales. Robert's book gave me several great ideas as to how to approach taking my photos, from altering lighting to careful utilization of a large array of filter apps. I have just started to scratch the surface of employing his techniques, and I can already tell a significant difference in my photos. I also appreciate that, while the book is geared toward the professional photographer, Robert wrote it in such a way that even I could follow along throughout. To see examples my photos, compare my Featured Item photos at https://www.etsy.com/shop/ArborVitaePendants to the other photos on my page. I am anxious to replace all of my photos with better versions as my skills improve.

This is a must get book if you want to improve your iPhone Photography!!!
By @CharlesTaggart
I’ve been enjoying photography for the better part of my life, almost 50 now and have been shooting since I was 12… Three years ago I chose to retire my old 35mm equipment for a DSLR, an iPad 3 and an iTouch 5 and to start pursuing a goal of over 22 years to be able to produce my own limited edition art and photo prints with investing in a large format photo printer… At first I thought the iPad and iTouch would be only good for showing my portfolio and basic pocket photo abilities on hand always with me… Once I saw the quality of the iPad 3 and iTouch 5 in photo enlargements and seeing so many people starting to use smart phones as their go to device for taking photos, I was hooked and started a 2nd business aimed at mobile photo print service…

Robert Morrissey's book- iPhoneography Pro is a well written, easy to understand and well laid out design with quality information, examples and images making it easy to understand… I have already recommended this to many of my friends who use their iPhones as their main source of taking photos to help them improve their iPhone imaging experience and memories…

Get back to work and stop larking about!
By John R. Brownlee
Do not buy this book until the author completes the promised trilogy. He has been promising the third book for four years, but seems preoccupied in other pursuits and enjoying the accolades of his fandom. Upon completion of this book, I went online to discover when the final book was to be published and uncovered extensive dissatisfaction from amazon readers who began their vigil with patient anticipation, but became deeply cynical about the author's claim that the book was already written. I checked out the author's website and learned that he is heavily merchandising products based on the first two novels and one novella, but refuses to reveal when the final volume will be released. This has been going on for years and while I will probably buy the kindle version when it is released, I have lost faith in the author's work ethic, commitment to his readership, and reliability as a trusted author. Too bad, because I was enjoying the story.

A tremendous second act
By Nick
I've seen some of the negative reviews of this second volume of the kingkiller chronicle posted here. I don't dismiss them, as I feel that like most books this one is not for everyone. However, it certainly was a book for me, and found it to be at least as powerful, engrossing, and artfully written as The Name of the Wind. I'd first address a few of the things one may not like about it:

Assuming you've read The Name of the Wind you should know that The Kingkiller chronicle is not a story like, for instance, A Song Of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). The latter gains much of its power from rich world-building, a myriad of characters connected by intricate web-like plot-lines, and more than a few story events that are world changing on a grand scale. Rothfuss's story is more self contained, character-driven, and subtle, but if this is the kind of thing you can't get behind you probably didn't make it through The Name of the Wind anyway. Of The Wise Man's Fear more specifically, I've seen a few commenters who felt it was more a continuation of the first book rather than a true second act, that it didn't move the story along enough for their liking, and that too many questions seem unanswered going into the (as of now) unreleased third book. I felt strongly to the contrary of each of these, for the following reasons.

The Wise Man's Fear picks up right where The Name of The Wind left off, in the University, with Kvothe expanding on many of the prior novel's plot-lines. This is satisfying but not until later in the story do you truly appreciate that Rothfuss isn't just tying up loose ends and replacing them with new ones. Rather, he's laying the groundwork for much of what is to come. Indeed, when the story shifts settings about halfway through it feels somewhat abrupt, but later it becomes clear how this transition is part of a larger natural progression of what Kvothe's character needed to grow. Without spoiling too much, let it suffice to say that Kvothe spends time in a few new settings where he picks up different pieces of the man he is to become, specifically pieces he couldn't have gotten at the University. Many times Kvothe doesn't realize the ways each of these new encounters change and shape him until after the fact. As such, The Wise Man's Fear is very much a story of Kvothe growing from a man of raw and untapped potential into one who actually fulfills that potential, often through unsuspected turns. At one point early in The Wise Man's Fear he reflects that, while much of his reputation had previously needed to be fueled by showmanship and artfully crafted deceptions (think of the story that he doesn't bleed, which was really just the result a medicinal trick and a great performance), some of his newer exploits needed less embellishment. This proves prophetic, and by the end of the book he actually has to alter some of the stories he tells in the opposite way because he feels the whole truth of them is actually too fantastic to be believable, or sometimes too dangerous.

Through this all, we learn more about the Chandrian, the Amyr, the Fae, and other core mysteries in the story. No revelations are particularly explicit; most require some inference on the part of the reader. Rothfuss has a great knack for subtle storytelling, and I felt he did this even better in The Wise Man's Fear than the first book, especially in the second half. Much of what the reader learns of these mysteries doesn't actually provide answers to the story's core questions, but rather brings better into focus the questions themselves. This sets things up nicely for a third volume to bring things neatly together. Likewise, in the "present day" a deeper appreciation is gained for the anguished "third silence" of Kote and his current state of being. At the end of The Wise Man's Fear Rothfuss hasn't directly connected many more plot elements than at the end of The Name of The Wind; but rather all such elements are brought into much closer proximity to one another, leaving the reader with a satisfying feeling of a story slowly, subtlety, and steadily coalescing. This, to me, is the mark of any good second act.

Captivating read-- but wouldn't recommend for younger readers
By Art W.
*Spoiler Free Review*

I read "Name of the Wind" because it was so highly rated/popular and while I thought it was an okay book (but not great) I kept on going because a close friend vouched for the second book in the series. I read it without being biased by any spoilers or reviews from anyone else (beside my friend). As far as books go, I thought that, generally, it moved more quickly than the "Name of the Wind" and that more happened. In my opinion this made "The Wise Man's Fear" significantly better than his first one. Patrick Rothfuss knows how to write-- has a good vocabulary (I definitely had to look up a few words!) and keeps you engaged in the story.

So why only four stars? I have three problems with the book. 1.) It went from a fairly family-friendly book to a book with a lot of adult content pretty quickly and actually focused on that a lot. If let your pre-teen/teen kids read the first one you might want to check it out first before you hand this one over too them. Problem # 2.) Even though it plods less. . . it still totally plods. You could easily cut out 1/4 of the book and not miss much. 3.) Even though I respect the idea of having Kvothe tell his story to the Chronicler I felt that every-time we switched back to present-day Kvothe it caused a break in the book that was both unnecessary and distracting.

Overall, I did enjoy the book and plan on reading the 3rd book in the series when it comes out. For adults I would (in most cases) tell them that the second book is better than the first and encourage them to read it. For younger audiences, probably not really at all because of the more adult-themed content.

Review
In From Bombs to Books Edmonds School principal, David Starr, shares the deeply moving stories of his students, their parents and the staff at Edmonds who support them. He describes the upheaval many of these families have undergone and how they managed to flee some of the most dangerous lands and people on earth.

He paints portraits of students who are often troubled by what they have experienced but who are surprisingly happy, normal children who have put their family's grief and trauma behind them. He also describes teachers and social workers who have embraced these families and dedicated themselves to making a difference in their lives.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Principal David Starr for writing his first book about the challenges faced by refugee students, their parents and teachers in an inner city school. (Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds Hansard transcript 2012-02-29)

"..a very powerful book about courage, survival and belonging." (Byrne Creek Community School Blog 2011-11-13)

“This is the book to read to remind ourselves why we become teachers. . . The true life stories in From Bombs to Books are a reminder of the important work we all do when faced with the life challenges of children as they walk through the doors each day.” (Canadian Teacher Magazine 2013-09-01)

Essential Reading in our Multi-Cultural World
By Kathy LYnn
Through the use of real stories, this book offers a glimpse into the world of the refugee families in our neighbourhoods. It's important reading for all teachers in order to gain an understanding of the children that will likely show up in their classroom at some point.
Everyone who has a child in school can also benefit so that they can help their kids befriend these kids and offer them the support and connection they need.
We can more easily welcome newcomers when we have a sense of what they are going through.
The book is also about an exceptional school and it's staff.
