10-Stars! A Must Read!

I was sure I wrote a review on this, but recently I found I didn't. I bought and read it four years ago and have been talking about it ever sense. Three years before that, I went through a period where I read The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, The Dream Manager (Audio CD), a bunch of Patrick Lencioni's works beginning with The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family (Audio), then The Five Temptations of a CEO (Audio CD), "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, and there were others about General Patton: General Patton's Principles for Life and Leadership, and Alan Axelrod's "Patton on Leadership" to name a few. During this whole time I kept hearing about this book, "First, Break All The Rules." It came highly recommended, but I did not even like the title. That's not how I think! Finally, I gave in and found this to be a groundbreaking and life-changing book on management and leadership. It first of all introduced me to Marcus Buckingham, who introduced me to his ideas and the results of 25 years of research by the Gallup Organization with great managers and their organizations. This was groundbreaking! I began to understand: to make things work effectively, you can't go by the "rules" as we have been led to believe. Secondly, following the trail of Buckingham, he then led me to Now, Discover Your Strengths, then to taking the Clifton Strengthsfinder Test, a code for which came with the book, then StrengthsFinder 2.0, then finally Living Your Strengths, or the Catholic Edition Living Your Strengths: Discover Your God-given Talents And Inspire Your Community.

Life has been different. Priorities have changed. Focuses are no longer the same. Thinking has been transformed. Work habits are no longer what they were. Working with others is more important. Outcomes now are always so much better!

this could not be bad :)

Gives great insight on how good/great management is done. Raises awareness how idiosyncrasies of employees matters. As based on the analysis of 1,5 mln. of hours of interviews with 80 k managers it's hardly can be bad right? For those who cannot afford a week or so to bring the book the the knees I will list below some of the ideas I remember or had jotted down.

1. People don’t quit their companies, they quit their bosses;
2. Define the right outcomes and then let each person find his own route toward those outcomes;
3. The most efficient route that nature has found from point A to point B is rarely a straight line. It is always the path of least resistance;
4. All roles demand some accuracy & safety, standardized steps are needed (Baring Bank case);
5. Languages, symbols, conventions, scales-these are the DNA of civilization-without the ability to accept standards we could have never developed such a complex society;
6. The companies that define the new standards will gain huge advantage over latecomers;
7. Customers’ levels of expectations
a. Accuracy
b. Availability
c. Partnership;
d. Advice/educate
8. Customer is ultimate judge of value;
9. Use practical ways to see world through your customers eyes;
10. At Disney they think vibrant companies should have 5 year plans but willing to change it every year - that’s tough for the intermediaries like managers;
11. When I draw my playbook I always go from the players to the plays-head coach of Minnesota Vikings;
12. Focus on each persons strengths and manage around his weaknesses. Don’t try to fix the weaknesses… help each person to become more of who he already is;
13. One of the sings of the great manager is the ability to describe in detail the unique talent of each of his people – what drives each one, how each one thinks, how each build relationships;
14. Know the difference between the skills and knowledge and weaknesses;
15. The golden rule is broken by the great managers every day-they don’t treat people the way they would lie to be treated-people don’t breath same psychological oxygen;
16. Time you spent with your best employee (not the weakest) is your most productive time;
17. No news is never good news;
18. From the perspective of great managers averaging is irrelevant to excellence-top performers have more potential for growth;
19. Success is achieved through a never-ending pursuit of improvement-personally, professionally financially and spiritually;
20. Each of us is a couple of talent cards short of a full deck;
21. Partnerships are not archetype, each partnership in fact is anomaly;
22. If you find yourself spending most of your time managing weakness of particular employee, than know that you’ve made a casting error;
23. When employee requires growth-promotion-help each person find roles that ask him to do more and more of what he is naturally wired to do;
24. Most employees are promoted to the level of their incompetence;
25. Great managers envision company where there are multiple routes towards respect and prestige;
26. Broadbanding – for each role you define a pay in broad bands or ranges with the top end of the lower level role overlapping the bottom end of the role above-companies like Merill Lynch & Disney have well endured the practice;
27. During the Gallup’s interviews with great managers they found a consistent willingness to hire employees who the manager knew, might soon earn significantly more than they did;
28. Create heroes in every role;
29. Great managers make sure to have 4 hours a year with an employee to discuss their career path;
30. When using trial periods for employees you must be very clear about the details;
31. What level of performance is unacceptable? Any level that hovers around average with no trend upward;
32. In mind of great managers to care means to set the person up for success;
33. G.M. on “tough love”- each of best men on my two weddings was someone I fired;
34. G.M. : but I know my people some times better then they know themselves;
35. The four keys to great management are:
a. Select for talent;
b. Define the right outcomes
c. Focus on strengths;
d. Find the right fit;
36. When casting for talent ask open-ended questions;
37. Past behavior is a good predictor of future behavior. Therefore questions like “tell me about a time when you…” can serve you well;
38. Pitfall is evaluating articulation and memory of interviewed;
39. Rapid learning is an important clue to persons talent. Ask candidate what kind of roles she has been able to learn quickly. Ask her what activities come easily to her now..
40. Great managers find times for performance management routines-4 common characteristics for it:
a. Routine is simple;
b. Routine forces frequent interaction between manager and employee;
c. Routine is focused on the future
d. Makes employee to keep track of his own performance
41. In the world according to great managers the employee is the star. The manager is the agent.
42. When you enter your place of work, you never leave it at zero. You either make it a little better or a little worse.
43. Managers trump companies;
44. Human power lies in its idiosyncrasy;
45. Real profit increase drives stock increase-sustainable growth drives real profit increase-loyal customers drive customer growth-engaged employees drive customer loyalty-the right people in the right roles wit the right managers drive employee engagement;
46. Great managers are not looking for people who are easy to manage;

First, Read This Book

I read it in two sittings, and made extensive notes. My only regret is that none of my previous managers (after a 25 year career) had read it - things could have gone a lot differently for me if they had....

I've read a lot of management books, and am an Agile consultant by profession, so I was interested in this book from a perspective of how I should be advising the middle managers that I come across when training teams. This book certainly answered that question...namely that the manager's role is to reach inside each employee and release his/her unique talents into performance. To help employees earn the accolade 'talented' by fitting them in the right role. In this new information age of collaborate, self-organized teams the message in this book is more relevant than ever (despite what the authors say about self-organization (or perhaps because of it)

They reached their climax when Germany, suffocated by an implacable naval blockade, decided to strike against the British ring of steel. The result was Jutland, a titanic clash of fifty-eight dreadnoughts, each the home of a thousand men.

When the German High Seas Fleet retreated, the kaiser unleashed unrestricted U-boat warfare, which, in its indiscriminate violence, brought a reluctant America into the war. In this way, the German effort to “seize the trident” by defeating the British navy led to the fall of the German empire.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Nicholas and Alexandra returns with a sequel to Dreadnought that is imposing in both size and quality, taking the British and German battle fleets through WWI. The fluent narrative begins amid the diplomatic crisis of July 1914 and ends with the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919. Massie makes a coherent if long narrative out of a sequence of events familiar to students of naval history but probably not to many other potential readers. The focus is on the two fleets that confronted each other across the North Sea, their weapons and tactics and their complex and controversial leaders, both military and political. As in his other books, the author describes his cast of characters with the vividness of a novelist, British Admiral Beatty's disastrous marriage being a painful case in point. What emerges from that focus is not only a number of outstanding battle narratives (Jutland is only the most famous), but a closely argued case for the German fleet having been a disaster for its country's war effort. Once built, the High Seas Fleet made war with England and the blockade of Germany inevitable. Unable to break the blockade with that expensive fleet, Germany felt compelled to choose between a negotiated peace and unrestricted submarine warfare. Once the Germans chose the latter course, American intervention and disaster become nearly unavoidable. It may seem odd to describe a book of this size as an "introduction," but readers will soon understand that the size of the topic requires a long narrative. In "Dreadnought," Massie chronicled the buildup of the British and German navies in the years before the First World War. Here he continues the story, showing the fleets in preparation for their inevitable decisive engagement. When the clash finally came, in 1916, at the Battle of Jutland, it was a somewhat muddled affair and both sides claimed victory. This centerpiece battle springs to life, thanks to Massie's clear grasp of tactics and his suspenseful narration. His portraits of major figures—including Winston Churchill, then a brash First Lord of the Admiralty, and the death-haunted Admiral von Spee—are perceptive and enthralling, and he writes of war's casualties with grim directness. Jutland marks a fascinating juncture in naval warfare: when the gentlemanly sea battle gave way to a more technical type of encounter. Submarines, which the British considered "the weapon of cowards," had already begun to dominate. Massie poignantly describes the sailors on older ships, who, when they spotted a modern cruiser on the horizon, knew that they were doomed, hours before the enemy fired a shot.

Dovetailing nicely with Dreadnaught (1991), which covers 40 years of British-German politics leading up to the Great War, his latest selection delves into politics by other means as the world's then two most powerful navies attempt to sink each other in the cold North Sea. While our cultural memory of World War I has largely been muddily entrenched in France and Belgium, this book shows that the sea was the war's most vital battleground, at a formative moment, adrift between Admiral Nelson-style high-seas adventure and modern aircraft-dominated naval combat. Yet while clearly well researched regarding technical specifications (gun apertures, water displacement, hull composition), Massie's tome is less a tale of technology and more of what he writes best: biographies of great men and complicated events. In this instance, it's the patient, thoughtful Admiral John Jellicoe, the man Winston Churchill said was "the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon," and his foil, the flamboyant Admiral David Beatty, at sea against the wishes of his clingy aristocratic wife. The key German officers are also covered, and the war's climax at Jutland is as much their story. Unlike the British attempt to eliminate the German High Seas Fleet, this book is a decisive success. The great sequel to "Dreadnought"

These dense tomes are a lot of fun to this hardcore history fanatic. If you liked Massie's books about the czars, you'll probably like this too. It even has many familiar places, and in the case of "Nicholas and Alexandra", many familiar faces.

The titles may be misleading. Yes, there is a great importance placed on battleships. but it's a mere focal point. Massie credits battleships and naval development with the driving force that changed the world from the Victorian era, where England ruled the oceans of the entire world, to an age in which the world and its seas were suddenly far too crowded. "Dreadnought" leads us through those world changes, and "Castles of Steel" takes us through the resulting cataclysm, World War I.

If there is any complaint to be had, it may be that Massie's books are just so huge and detailed. But he is a lover of history, and he includes all these details because they are almost always too interesting to omit.

Outstanding book!

Tremendous account of information. Book is dense and meaty. Starts with a rather detailed account of the personalities involved before moving on to the history. The book is fairly anglo-centric, which is to say most of the book deals with the British side of events. I might like a more balanced look at things, but as it stands there is still plenty of information and analysis on the German side as well. One thing I could have used was more diagrams of the various ship designs that might have better helped me to understand the actions. Battleship design was still evolving, and the standard 'turrets on the centerline' design was far from standard in WW1. I'm not a naval historian, and could have used the extra detail. I can't believe I just said that abuot one of the most detailed books I've read in a long time! Still, Wikipedia and all that.

Great book if you are into very detailed military/naval history

This contains extremely detailed treatment of the naval side of WW I between Britain and Germany.

It differs greatly from its predecessor "Dreadnought" which covered a large time frame and the diplomatic ins and outs of the huge time period (pre-American Civil War to the outbreak of WW I) and does not have so many mini-biographies of the persons involved.

I would say "Dreadnought" is the better and more interesting of the books. "Castles of Steel" is definitely for hardcore lovers of naval history as it covers engagements at sea in extreme detail, down to the signals flown by the flagships and the intelligence reports received by both sides, not to mention almost each hit received by the ships involved.

Overall a great book, but compared with part I of the 2-book series (not sure if it's billed as such, but that is the case) it is slightly too involved with the minutiae for my taste. Still I give it 4 stars because of the staggering amount of research and work that must have been necessary for Massie to write it.

    Greatly Enjoyed

    I love catching up with my Canadian shifters. Francine is pregnant, the twins are thriving, the ladies are still crazy as all get up and the fellas are still sexy. I enjoyed Jiao and Sheng a brother going to any extremes to protect his sister and keep the promise that he made to his parents about her safety. I loved that Jiao was for Chris they made a sweet couple and Gina and Sheng what a great combination. Gina was my kinda girl, loud, sassy, confident, curvy and knows what she wants and isn't afraid to admit it. I love this series.

    Poor Chris a player and a ladies man finds his mate, but before he can claim her to be his, he gets another surprise.. She is freakn' MARRIED! Not wanting to go down his sister or brothers path and have a menage relationship he is determined to get "Jill" to be his. After all the man she married is not her true mate.

    The chemistry started as soon as Jill opened the door. They both realize right away that they are mates but there is the little problem of Jills husband Jack. But Jill being married isn't even half of it. What her and Jack have together is not a normal in any sort of way marriage! I mean it, so if you are like cheaters suck please have no fear because you will soon find out that this is so not the case.

    Even though the marriage isn't as it seems it is still hard for Jill to be with Chris. But our handy man is not giving in without a fight. They start off with a few stolen moments after his cousin Gina decided to help out with Jack. She is going to be a distraction but soon finds out that her Jack are way more then that.

    Before any of these couples can be together shit hits the fan. All Jack and Jills secrets come pouring out!!

    Oh my I am sorry. I totally went into summary mode. There is just so much happening. We are dealing with 2 couples, well kinda 3 if you count the marriage that isn't a marriage.

    I love Chris's family! Seriously his mom kicks ass. When the bad guys come for Jill, Chris knows just what to do. He calls his mommy. A wise call because the woman is a bad ass. The family relationships are just something I totally enjoyed.

    This is a great read. While I enjoy the menage couples, I am really a one guy one girl kinda gal. I guess its that possessive side in me that just can't totally wrap my head around sharing.

    Already Freakn' Mated is sure to bring a smile to your face, some snorts and of coarse get you a little hot and bothered!! Eve Langlais can really do no wrong in my reading world!!

    Very useful information in a variety of settings

    Asset-based analysis of communities can be used in working to fortify a variety of underfunctioning or dysfunctional environments. This approach to community building can also be applied to families, businesses, and government. The information is practical and well-organized for optimal understanding and use.

    This book may seem mundane. It isn't. It is Systems Theory in community healing, in creating healthy communities, even with few resources. I have seen people who put the ideas to work. 5 stars for ideas, I wish it had been organized a little differently, but it's still very, very good. I have used his ideas on a small scale, myself, in my own city, and gotten results better than I thought possible. My favorite kind of review, however, is one where similar books are cited, that maybe fill in holes, or supplement the main ideas. The first book I might suggest is Ending Violent Crime Cheaply and Permanently: A Vision Of A Society Free Of Violence. For many inner city communities, significant sectors of the minority male population are cycled through a school of violent crime, where the gangs do their corporate training, at Ivy League tuition costs. This is not useful. We need a better way. This book doesn't just talk about incrementally handling a small portion of the population, no, it is ending violent crime, cheaply and permanently. RETURN TO CREATION and The Original Instructions: Reflections of an Elder on the Teachings of the Elders, Adapting Ancient Wisdom to the Twenty-First Century are also useful, they describe an important level of creating healthy community that BCFTIO couldn't cover. The Chicago Church that was down to a handful of members, and then changed their intent and now are a huge housing developer- part of what they did is described, in theory at least, in The Intenders Handbook; a Guide to the Intention Process and the Conscious Community. Healthy community is the result of intent. The forthcoming book Blossoming the Child, on removing trauma from child-raising, would be useful also, however it is currently only available in German. Kretzmann's stuff is fascinating.

    I read this to my tween kids. They loved the adventure. Good story. Good clean detective story- that is hard to find nowadays. I love Nancy Drew. Even though it was written quite a while back, my kids were always asking me to read another chapter.
