A Contribution to the Field of Organization Design

Rupert Morrison has produced an important contribution to the field of organization design and organization effectiveness. This book focuses on practical implementation of design with an emphasis on data and analytics. Morrison, who is Managing Director at Concentra, which boasts, “We transform how organisations manage and use data to get the edge” previously had a 15 year stint with A. T Kearney. He comes at the subject with a feel for both sides of the desk, both advisor and manager.

I look at this book from the point of view of someone steeped in levels of work and levels of capability, the aspect of organization design known as Requisite Organization or Stratified Systems Theory. Morrison addresses the ideas of levels of capability favourably in a chapter on talent management, succession development and succession planning. It is clear to me that the other side of the coin, levels of work, would have strengthened many other parts of this useful and comprehensive book. But I don’t fault Morrison for this, because he has only recently become exposed to this stratified thinking. I can relate to his experience, as I was involved deeply in organization design and effectiveness consulting for thirty years before I was exposed to the pioneering work of Elliott Jaques. It has since revolutionized my own work, and I am sure will have the same effect on Morrison in the future.

Data Driven Organization Design approaches the subject from the vantage point of Stratum IV, that level of managerial work often called general management where strategy is translated into practical operations, where various functional work processes like sales and manufacturing and customer service need to be balanced and integrated. This is the great strength of the book.

Starting with the foundations that the organization is a system, that organizational data are hierarchical, and that organization data are messy, he shows how use of data and analytics can build persuasive business cases for improvement. He links strategy with structural options and shows practical ways of aligning objectives with performance, designing for fixed processes and for dynamic processes like projects. With these linkages he is illustrating how Stratum III functional processes can be articulated, scoped and agreed by various stakeholders. Morrison has a keen sense of people and the need to make use of data and analytics in ways to help rational decision-making where emotions run high.

Morrison holds out hope that HR data can be strengthened with improved competency management. A much more disciplined approach to competency is called for, he asserts, because so much of what is done in this area is ineffectual, an assessment with which I agree. Morrison provides a very useful insight into “rightsizing”, based on ratio analysis, activity analysis driver analysis, and for the really challenging situations, mathematical modeling.

I found the final section of the book, “Making it Real”, the strongest. It reflects the author’s depth of experience in making things work in practice implementing changes. I liked his workforce planning and talent management ideas. His sense of practicality, along with a creative flair for graphically visualizing data mark a very important contribution to the field of organization design, effectiveness and change.

I am delighted that he has discovered the concepts of levels of work. If he can apply this new insight more broadly it would both simplify and strengthen what he knows and presents so ably. It would not take much to align his concept of transactional, operational and strategic onto the distinctions between Stratum I, II, III and IV, and this framework would serve as a structure for so much of what has presented in this fine book. I would hope he would find other RO insights also helpful in simplify ing and integrating his work. For example, the idea that it is a manager who is accountable for the work of the employee would greatly strengthen his work on accountability.

I recommend Data Driven Organization Design to those seriously interested in the field.

“Data Driven Organization Design” by Rupert Morrison is an interesting new entry to the line of management literature dealing with organization effectiveness. The book links organization development both from what the author calls macro level and the more detailed micro level, all the while, underlining the importance of seeing the organization as one holistic system.
The major portion of this book deals with short and long term (HR) process structure build up as the platform for “Data Driven Organization Design”. The author provides approaches, methodologies and tools across the line for planning, implementing and follow up similar to Six Sigma and the like, a vast tool box presented in an easy to read way. Approaches for cascading the strategic focus areas, like Objective Management, MECE, and getting it right with individuals, the Flow Model (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) provide additional support for clarity in roles.
Given the focus of the book the author still suggests a sound relationship towards data -- “Data collection must be backed by deep understanding of multiple connections between people, roles, skills and activities”. In particular I think this is true in all those organizational change projects that are taking place in big corporations, with extremely tight time schedules, in their constant adaption to changing market conditions.
The book offers corporate HR specialists a number of useful perspectives and extensive practical advice. The author builds on extensive experience dealing with real situations in companies, discussing needs for tradeoffs and balancing acts that all executives experience as a way to handle complexity in interdependencies of all kinds. Particularly this is true at the end of the book (Making it Real) when the author presents approaches regarding challenges in getting support for suggested changes among employees, and their need for clear understanding of their role in the perspective of the total.
I read the book from the perspective of my experiences as a company executive and 10 years as a senior consultant working primarily at the macro level for international companies using Elliot Jaques’s science-based Stratified Systems Theory. It’s my view that this work would benefit from a closer linkage with Dr Jaques’s work, referenced under the heading Talent Management (Time Span Handbook) where the author also presents “stratum levels”.
In my view, using the RO/SST would provide a tighter and more relevant link between strategy and organizational structure as well as for clarify in roles and staffing. Requisite Organization/Stratified Systems Theory has the benefit of clarifying what defines the different levels of complexity (strata role/individual) of work, and the importance of the relationship (role/individual) between manager and subordinate as the core of any organizational structure, using time to define complexity for what has to be achieved for the company as a whole as well as for each role/individual aligned in a systemic approach to become effective. Using the levels of work complexity approach would avoid some of the unnecessary hurdles in organizational design in the current book and diminish or resolve others.
Who should read this book? I think HR managers and professionals, managers and analysts in planning and process development functions as well as executives who would like to know more about how the HR function could be developed would benefit from reading this book.

Integrating and IT Enabling Organization Design

Since I have been interested in organizational modeling for some time, it was edifying to get ahold of Morrison’s book where he ties together all the elements of a data driven approach to organization design.

Many of us have been conducting the different aspects of organization design manually, aided by MS Excel, PowerPoint and/or with business process modeling tools, but Morrison shows how these parts can be integrated with new platforms such as graph data bases.

Some of my favorite parts of book include, Foundations and Core Concepts (Part 1) particularly such as those pertaining to “Creating Hierarchical Data Structures” (pg. 37), “Connecting the System” (pg. 40), and “Visualizing to Analyze” (pg. 46) and other segments that emphasize these aspects (e.g. pgs. 118, 146).

While particular strengths of the book come into play around the detailed baselining and micro design (Part 3), Morrison has chapters the addresses a typical sequence involving macro design (Part 2) and implementation and ongoing operational considerations (Part 4).

However, this book covers the organization design “waterfront” and provides the type of framework required to bring all the various aspects together so they can be used in a concerted fashion. This kind of capability provides the basis for what some have called a "built to change" organization.

Along the way Morrison includes such aspects as competency management and rightsizing, then deals extensively with the practicalities of “how it will work in practice.” Emphasizing throughout that organization design is a continuing journey, he deals with workforce planning, talent management, and additional matters involved with getting things done and sustaining over time.

For strong case support, many visual and “how to” examples, read Morrison’s book for help in making progress in integrating and IT enabling organization design.

The welder bible

A very good book for who wants to start welding, in order to fix things at home or develop art skills as the book is full of ideas, project, etc.
Very serious book, a reference even, it inventories the different kinds of welding, and above all, most important, it insists on the safety; thus, precious tips concern your own protection (gloves, goggles, mask...) and the others protection (shop arrangement, fire extinguisher..., and the specific manipulation of the welding tools, if they are oxyacetylene tanks, arc, ....
This book is cheap and is a must, to be recommended.

Great book despite the other reviews.

I thought this book was worth reading. Yes, I've read the other reviews that said it was too simplified and for idiots but for someone who has never welded, or like me has not welded since high school, it covers the basics. It gives a good comparison of different technologies (Oxy, SMAW, MIG, TIG and plasma) the pros/cons of each. No, this book will not teach you how to weld like a pro but it is a good starting point if you want to learn about the various technologies or trying to decide what type of welder you want or need to get started. The Welder's Handbook (Finch) is also a good beginner's guide.

This is the second edition, updating the original, and has an additional chapter ‘aimed at helping the newly appointed manager through their first months in veterinary practice’. Nice book for the U.K.

This is a nice, organized and very informative book. The major drawback for US users is that it is written in and about veterinary practices in England. The information about labor laws etc. is basically not helpful for the States. Also all wage and salary calculations are in english pounds. I wish I had been aware that it is english before buying one for use in the US.

About the Author

Barry M. Staw is the Lorraine T. Mitchell Professor of Leadership and Communication at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and has previously served on the faculties at the University of Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, and UCLA. He is the author of more than 60 academic articles and has edited several hooks on organizational behavior. He has served on the editorial boards of most major journals in the fields of organizational behavior and applied psychology, and is founder and co-editor of the annual series, Research in Organizational Behavior. Professor Staw's current research interests include the relationship of affect and emotion to work performance, the escalation of commitment, organizational innovation, and the linkage of psychological processes to organizational strategy. He recently received the Academy of Management's Scholarly Contributions Award in recognition of his career achievements in research.

Welcome to the fascinating world of organizational behavior. Here you will learn about the nature of people and how their behavior is influenced by others in organizations. You will study some basics of individual motivation, attitudes, and decision making, and see how these human tendencies can be forged into productive and ethical actions. You will read about how people are influenced by the politics and culture of an organization, and also how people may themselves shape the environment in which they work. Finally, you will study what it takes to be creative in an organizational setting, with tips about how to lead organizations in new and innovative directions.

This book is organized into four major dimensions. In each, one or more "foundation" readings are presented in which basic knowledge from the organizational sciences is reviewed. Then "applications" are presented from the literature of organizational behavior. The readings cover most of the major topics in the organizational behavior field and reflect the current state of our knowledge. Some chapters are research summaries; some are think pieces. All have been selected by the combined criteria of writing style and content. Thus, if a piece appears a bit dry, bear with it; it should contain enough content to be worth the effort. If a piece is especially interesting, enjoy the experience. When you finish this anthology, you should not only understand more about how people think and behave, but have some new ideas about how such behavior can be combined to build a productive and healthy organization.

Book content is great but...

Content: this book is good but outdated, most of the content is based in research papers or cases from the the late 80s and the early 2000. I wish current research had been presented.

Textbook condition: well I paid used book's price. Instead of receiving a "used original book" I received an original photocopy of it. Not cool!!!
On my end this was a big issue since I use and abuse of highlighters. With original books the ink does not go through the pages but with cheap photocopies it does, I ended up making holes through some of the pages.... Due to time I had to keep the book. I wish there was a way to identify through amazon whether or not I am buying a cheap photocopy or an original book.

The book was trashed

I recieved this book today and the condition of the book was not as described. The binding is off and the pages are falling out of the book and there are post it and highlights marks and pencil marks throughout the book. It was priced too high to be in the condition that I recieved this book in. I will not be purchasing another book from this seller.

Mary Shelley's novel, 'The Last Man' is a work which is slowly gaining the critical attention it richly deserves. Fans of 'Frankenstein' will be astounded at how much deeper Mary Shelley's indictment of 'masculine' visionary Romanticism, technology, and the faults of humanity go in 'The Last Man'. At the same time, the novel is fraught with problems and contradictions which give an already paranoid work a whirling sense of internal dementia.
The action of 'The Last Man' takes place between 2073 and 2100 AD. England is ripe for change as the last King of England abdicates his throne in response to public outcry for a more democratic form of government. Lionel Verney, a shepherd, is drawn out of a life of wildness and crime by Adrian, the former crown prince of England. The charismatic Lord Raymond enters the story as the lover of Lionel's sister, Perdita, and the newly-elected Lord Protector of England. Torn between his love of power and his affections for his wife and a persistent attachment to Evadne, a Greek woman, Raymond renounces his political position and flees to Greece. There, he leads a military campaign to establish Greek independence and bring about the end of the Turkish empire.
Then, the Plague takes over. The nondescript malady has wiped out the population of Constantinople just as Raymond conquers it, making his victory meaningless. Word of the plague's virulence comes in from Asia and America, and from the southern, eastern, and western corners of the world, the plague begins to encroach inward towards Europe and England. The remainder of the novel tracks Lionel and Adrian's attempts to save the human race from utter annihilation.
In 'The Last Man', Mary Shelley gives us a horrifying, desolate prophecy of the future, when religion, technology, and human effort are all exposed as meaningless. Although many might say that she also abandons the redemptive possibilities of art, I think that art provides the novel's only hope. Mary Shelley's dependence on art of every format is clear in the novel's influences - She has Lionel refer to literature, including the works of Daniel Defoe, Charles Brockden Brown, Ann Radcliffe, Homer, Shakespeare, and Jonathan Swift among others.
The novel is fraught with problems of gender and power relations. At any moment of emotional weakness, Lionel calls himself 'girlish' or 'womanly,' and the novel seems to privilege women who are selfless and submissive. On the other hand, as Morton Paley's introduction points out, the plague itself is consistently described as female, at one place referred to as 'The Queen of the World'. With regard to power relations, Lionel continually mentions that in the dying world of humanity, social distinctions have all been abandoned - and yet there are still references to his 'servant' or those of other people. The most problematic scene in the novel revolves around racial distinctions when Lionel encounters a dying black man in London.
There are a million things to talk about in 'The Last Man,' and a novel so rich for discussion deserves to be read by as many people as possible. This is a book I warmly recommend, so pick it up and discover that there is more to Mary Shelley than 'Frankenstein'.

The Beginning of the End

In "The Last Man" (1826) Mary Shelley conceived a plot device that would eventually be used by a string of writers: an apocalyptic plague that virtually wipes out the human race. From "The Last Man" would come books like "The Scarlet Plague" (1912), "Earth Abides (1949) and "The Stand" (1978), each work taking something from its predecessor, each work written in a separate, distinctive era. The passage of time would allow writers to be more graphic in terms of aftermath, as readers became more sophisticated and less disturbed by what earlier generations would consider "horrifying".
"The Last Man" takes place in the late 21st century: a future without telephones, cars, television or computers. In fact life in the 2090s is not that different to the 1820s, apart from a few political changes (Britain is now a republic). Readers who criticized "Earth Abides" for being dated would have even more to complain about here. Shelley could not possibly have guessed the advances, social and technological, that would take place since 1824. Therefore it's helpful for the modern reader to pretend the story is happening in an alternate 21st century, along the lines of "Pavane".
The narrator Lionel Verney spends the first third of the book describing his early life, telling us how an altruistic young man of noble stock (Adrian) took him under his wing, effectively saving him from a life of penury. Lionel and his younger sister now mix in the highest circles, the cultured world of art, literature and music (things which the working class had nothing to do with in the 1820s).
Mary Shelley's prose is formal to say the least. Containing echoes of Byron and Wordsworth, it is rich, stylish and philosophical. It is not until Part two of the novel that the plague makes its appearance. When Shelley describes the plague there is mention of bodies lying in the open and the breakdown of order, but she doesn't treat it with the kind of brutal frankness that Stephen King does in "The Stand". It does look as if King was influenced by Shelley however. Here is a quote from "The Last Man":
"The ward was filled with an effuvia that caused my heart to heave with painful qualms. The dead were carried out, and the sick brought in, with like indifference; some were screaming with pain, others laughing from the influence of more terrible delerium; some were attended by weeping, despairing relations, others called aloud with thrilling tenderness or reproach on the friends who had deserted them while the nurses went from bed to bed incarnate images of despair, neglect and death."
Here is a quote from "The Stand" one and a half centuries later:
"Wards were crammed. Patients lay on the floors. The halls were full; nurses, many of them obviously sick themselves, wove in and out, some of them weeping hysterically. Others looked shocked to the point of coma." King also adds little details like the smell of waste and the cries of the damned. While Shelley is poetic, King is direct and to the point. He was writing for an audience whose attention span has been diminished by things like television and films laden with special effects. The impatient 21st century reader may therefore find "The Last Man" more of a challenge.
Although Shelley's plague is more gradual than those of other writers, society is still crumbling. Even though extinction is in the air, the main characters still perform acts of heroism. The character Adrian has all the makings of a saint. It's just unfortunate that there will be no one left alive to canonize him. Although "The Last Man" is dated, it did pave the way for a genre that still fascinates and terrifies readers today. Mary Shelley is owed a great debt in terms of apocalyptic literature.

"The Last Man," the best of Mary Shelley's "other" works

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley published "The Last Man" in 1826, eight years after her classic "Frankenstein" and four years after her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley died. Of all of her other novels, "The Last Man" is clearly the one that is of more than passing interest. In her Journal in May of 1824 Shelley wrote: "The last man! Yes, I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me." The result was one of the first novels to tell a story in which the human race is destroyed by pestilence, which we have seen in novels from Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" and Stephen King's "The Stand," and films such as the recent "28 Days Later..." However, "The Last Man" is also an early example of a dystopian novel set in the 21st century when England is a republic being governed by a ruling elite. Adrian, Earl of Windsor (and a representation of Shelley's late husband) introduces the narrator of the tale, Lionel Verney, who is the required outsider to describe and comment upon the world of the future.
Shelley's vision of the future is essentially a reaction against Romanticism and the failure of the movement to solve the problems of the world with art and imagination. This would stand in contrast to earlier English utopian works such as Francis Bacon's "The New Atlantis," which reflected the Age of Reason's belief that science would solve any and all problems. Shelley begins the story as a romance, with Lord Raymond (presumed to be modeled on Lord Byron) winning the hand of the lovely Perdita and being elected Protector. In contrast to the dire predictions of Thomas Malthus regarding unchecked population growth resulting in mass starvation, an ideal world seems to have been created. But then the plague breaks out in Constantinople and starts spreading. This plague is grounded more in fantasy than science, with Shelley clearly relying more on Boccaccio and Defoe, for her pandemic, which is not contagious (an interesting plot choice to be sure).
The point of the plague is that it allows Shelley to show the best and the worst of human nature. When the demagogue Ryland abdicates being Lord Protector, the altruistic Adrian takes his place and makes an appeal for brotherhood, even as anarchy runs rampant in the streets and eventually the main characters are forced to flee England, which has strong parallels to the expulsion from Eden. This sets up the idea at the end of the novel that the last survivors might be able to establish an earthly paradise and rebuild the human race after the plague has disappeared. I was rather surprised that Shelley kills off her female characters because I had expectations that this would be more of a feminist work. Of course, this is because I remember who her mother was, but "The Last Man" is clearly concerned more with her late husband.
"The Last Man" was probably Mary Shelley's least successful work during her lifetime, but today, which the interest in science fiction, as well as the real world threats of biological warfare and other weapons of mass destruction, this idea of how the world ends is quite pertinent. This is clearly her most important work after "Frankenstein," although obviously we are talking about a significant gap.

A Blast from Homestead

An excellent account of the strike written just after it occurred by someone who knew the scene and events and could describe it well in language that is clear and fresh to the modern reader. Although the author says that he will relate just the events of the strike and let the reader decide the morality for themselves the events he chooses to relate and the language he uses makes it pretty clear whose side he favored. I grew up about five miles down the road from the events described in the book, frequently passed the site of the strike and was picturing it as it might have been over a century ago while reading the account. My only quibble would be that I would have liked to hear about what working in the mill was like. When this book was written the hours, dangers, pay and conditions of life and labor in Homestead were possibly so standard and taken for granted that it was not considered necessary to either describe or decry them

Kindle Edition is Very Handy

Because it's difficult to have a book with me all of the time, it's handy to have the Kindle edition whenever I need to study for the upcoming CSW exam. Of course it's not as functional as a real workbook (no ability to fold pages, make notes in the margins, etc.), but it's very handy during those times when you just need to study and only your phone is available.

A great text for anyone wanting to learn more about wine

A fantastic read whether you are preparing for certification or not. It provides a great review of grapes, terroir and winemaking, covers the wine regions of the world and includes several maps that can be easily viewed on a tablet. I would recommend this book to anyone interested to learn more about wine.
