This is what war is really like...a must read.

This is an extraordinary book because it brings us back to those weeks just before America entered World War Two and lets us see the war through the eyes of a young guy who could’ve been any of us had we been there then.

Hank and Theo are as close as brothers can be, tied together by their love for baseball helped by their dad. They join the Navy and the Army Air Force weeks before we entered WW II.

But it’s Navy man Hank we follow aboard the doomed aircraft carrier Yorktown as it heads to the Pacific destined to help stop Japanese aggression and reverse the tide.

We hear first hand as Hank tells us what he experiences and what he feels as his new baseball partner turns out to be an African-American who has to serve as a waiter for the pilots and other officers.

Few books about war are as effective in suggesting what war is really like....a must read for all ages.

Bad Publishing - Buy Another Version

This book is a poorly published example of The Republic. There are no chapter or section markers and there is no attribution to the translator. Upon receiving this book (and being severely dissatisfied), I promptly ordered The Republic of Plato: Second Edition by Allan Bloom and have been very happy. Being that this book and another share the same ratings (including the same comments), I count this as false advertising.

Kindle Edition, Up to snuff.

This review is dedicated exclusively to the work published on Kindle. This is not the least expensive Kindle edition,and it is not the most expensive. It is almost exactly halfway between the two. And, unless you have a special reason for wanting the Allen Bloom translation, I suggest you get this one, for half the cost. The active Table of Contents is just as good as you need it to be, and the material added by the editor / translator is good, without being noisome. You came, after all, to read Plato, not someone else's opinion of Plato.

The top of the list for requirements with this kind of work is that all the identifying numbers and letters identifying where you are in the work are present, and searchable. This is huge. There are probably a dozen or so editions from a half dozen major translators, and the only way to find your way around is through these line numbers, which all good scholarly citations should include. I just did a quick look at the preview of Allan Bloom's edition, and these numbers are missing from the Kindle. If you want Bloom's translation, get it on paper (which does have the line numbering) and get this one for searching.

I will mention that this also has the virtue of not being the 19th century translation of Benjamin Jowett. You will not be mislead by Jowett, but there have been several newer translations which have improved on his work. This one by G. M. A. Grube may be one of the best, but even if it is not, there is always virtue in having more than one translation. My hand copy translation is by Paul Shorey, in the Loeb Classics edition, with the Greek. So I like having the alternative available.

A Wealth of Wisdom

In our contemporary age, most of what of the Platonic texts, especially "The Republic," state should be done in order to obtain perfection in society is extremely controversial.

However, Plato remains a genius; for every controversial statement, he makes a logical argument which the reader has no choice but to accept, not agree on, but accept, for his logos is always on solid foundation.

And with it, he ventures forth and creates his perfect society all to prove one statement: that men who abide by and submit to justice and virtue live fuller and more joyful lives than those that use injustice to get ahead in life.

The importance of Plato's Republic would be understated; this is one of the most influential and arguably one of the most beautiful tomes of human history and over two millenia of conservation has proven so.

To live and not read the Republic, or not indulge yourself in the philosophy left by such genius men, would be a tremendous waste in the potential of opening your mind. And this version, with its translation and little cute bookmark, does a splendid job.

About the Author
John Henry Haaren (1855-1916) was an American educator and historian. Haaren's father was German and his mother Irish. He studied under Prof. N. M. Butler at Columbia University, 1889-91, before becoming a teacher in New York. In 1907 he became Associate Superintendent of Schools in New York, increasing the number and efficiency of kindergartens and starting classes to teach English to foreigners. He was president of the department of pedagogy in the Brooklyn Institute. Haaren High School (which was located on 10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in Manhattan) was named in his honor. The Charles B. J. Snyder-designed school which was initially DeWitt Clinton High School is now Haaren Hall on the campus of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Book good, but revised

This book is still an excellent book, but it is a revised edition to the original and this is NOT CLEAR from the information on the product. Several chapters on famous men in church history have been removed from the compilation in this edition. It is missing chapters on "Two Monks: Benedict and Gregory", "Gregory VII and Henry IV", and "St. Francis and St. Dominic". It is also missing the original preface, although this is just an explanation of the author's philosophy of history education and not vital to the content of the book. I wish I had known before ordering that certain chapters had been removed.

Good History Suppliment

I read aloud a chapter or two each day from "Famous Men of the Middle Ages" to my homeschooled child as she was learning about the Middle Ages. It was a good suppliment to the curriculum. Written in story form, each chapter is only a few pages long, and gives an account of a person in history. This format gives more detail and is a bit more interesting than just reading a text book. Upon the completion of the Middle Ages unit study, my daughter took a 50 question test and remarked on several occasions, "Oh I remember, we read about that!" Due to that response I am looking to purchase something similar for the study of the Renaissance.

Another great book

I sat down the night the book came and read it cover to cover. Interesting and well-written, it is a good introduction to some of the key figures of the middle ages. My children used Famous Men of Rome last year and loved it. They like this one just as much and we highly recommend it as a springboard into a study of the middle ages.

About the Author
STEPHEN R. GREENWALD has served as an executive, financier, consultant, and lawyer within the motion-picture industry. He is currently president of Aurelius Capital PLC and has worked in almost every capacity imaginable in the movie business at: Presto Productions, a film-and-television development and production company; G&H Media, a business-and financial-consulting firm for the film-and-television industry; Odyssey Pictures Corporation and Vision International, worldwide film distributors; and De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, a production and distribution company where he served as chairman and CEO. While he was an executive at De Laurentiis, the company released more than twenty films, including Blue Velvet and Crimes of the Heart.

Mr. Greenwald has also worked as an independent syndicator and dealmaker for real-estate and motion-picture ventures. His production credits include Snowboard Academy and Amityville II: The Possession. From 1999 to 2007, he was president of the Metropolitan College of New York, where he launched an innovative graduate business program in media management, the first of its kind in the country.

PAULA LANDRY is a film and music producer who creates commercials, multimedia concerts, films both short- and long-form, and branded videos for the Internet. Her movies have premiered at Sundance and gone on to win awards worldwide.

Ms. Landry is currently president of Idea Blizzard Productions, a media-consulting company, and also heads a commercial-music enterprise, FireStorm Productions. She has produced media projects for American Health and Fitness, Fit TV, the Odyssey Channel, Pearson Television, and several Fortune 500 companies. Read to Your Child to Develop Bonding and Intellect!

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Blue Hat, Green Hat was one of her picks.
Although ostensibly about colors, this book is subtly about much more. Clothes are put on an elephant, a bear, a moose, and a turkey. As you can imagine, putting clothes on a turkey is a challenge. So the turkey always has the clothes on in some strange way (shirt around tail feathers but not on legs, hat on the feet, pants around head and chest, socks on front feathers, coat on beak, etc.). That is a wonderful way to teach you child the word "oops" and to associate doing something unusual with fun. What a great preparation for mistakes later in life!
All of the pictures are pretty silly, so you will engage your child's sense of the ridiculous. For example, the elephant, bear and moose are standing on their hands when wearing colored pants.
For help with learning the colors, each sequence has the colors in a different order. That makes learning a greater challenge and more interesting.
By sticking with few colors and many situations, the task of learning is made manageable for the child. Since the story is short, it also matches a child's attention span.
Overcome your misconception stall that young children are not ready for humor and book learning!

Guaranteed Belly Laughs!

Well, the other animals seem to be able to put their clothes on (a task that takes quite a bit of early skill, as any parent or grandparent knows). But what about the poor rooster? Ooops! The poor thing just can't get it right.
This wonderful book is special on many levels. First of all, it tickles a toddler's funny bone like no other...listen to your child yell, "Ooops!" and break up laughing. Definitely a plus right there. Then, it subtly teaches colors (the blue hat is indeed blue, the green hat is indeed green, and so forth). And finally, it shows the child that it's OK to make mistakes, and that learning such a huge task as dressing oneself can be hard even for roosters!
Along with every other Boynton book I've ever seen, this one's a keeper.

My 2 year old laughs out loud at this adorable book.

Our 23 month old son LOVES this book. He laughs every time the hat is on the foot instead of the head and it says "OOPS!" This is an age appropriate book because our son loves to play around by putting hats and other things on his head. He loves different animals and making animal sounds when he sees them. And he is learning his colors and likes to point out and say the different colors of the hats. This is a great little board book that I'm so glad we bought, and I'd highly recommend it for toddlers!

The very definition of "Christian Counseling"

Although D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones's "Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Its Cure" is nearly forty years old, the truth it speaks to a generation lost amid a plethora of pop-psychology books is timeless. Jones, long the pastor of Westminster Chapel, gives readers the benefit of his many years of preaching and counseling, paving the way for the lost to find their way home.
Psychology and Christianity have two dichotomous worldviews that cannot be shoehorned into each no matter how hard anyone tries. Psychology attempts to bolster the inner self, while Christianity says that the inner self is so hopelessly corrupt that it must be replaced with something entirely new. To this end Jones points out that all depression has its root in sin and works from that point to lead readers into an understanding that only in Christ can release from the bondage of self come.
In the pages of this work, we find Jones addressing the following issues that many who are downcast find themselves afflicted by:
* Lack of a foundation in Christ
* Lack of clarity
* Poor spiritual balance between the mind, heart, and will
* Inability to receive forgiveness for all their sins
* Inability to move beyond past failures
* Fear of the future
* Placing too much confidence in emotions
* Faulty love of oneself and a general contempt for others
* Lack of faith
* Seeing only bad and not good
* Bondage to dead legalism
* Failing to recognize false teachings
* Weariness
* Lack of discipline
* Failure to handle trials appropriately
* Failure to respond correctly to chastening
* Bitterness
Jones does a marvelous job of breaking down each of these traits found in those in the doldrums and sheds the light of Scripture on each as he takes a solely Christian look at the root of these problems and how to deal with them biblically. Best of all, at no time does he attempt to mix in solutions from pop-psychology in order to achieve wholeness. His answers are more real and more true to the heart of the depressed. Anyone who feels downtrodden will take enormous comfort in the gentle, but firm words here.
While the advice here is timeless, the book does suffer slightly from having an older writing style that contrasts with the flow of more modern works. Those who have not read anything older than twenty years will find some of Jones's writing techniques to be quaint and very British, but if you have read any works by his contemporary, C.S. Lewis, you will be familiar with the style of British writers of that day and will find nothing daunting in Jones.
In the end, as a counteracting work to the psychobabble so pronounced today, "Spiritual Depression" is without peer and I heartily encourage anyone who is looking for true Christian counsel to read this book - Jones's words are a life-giving balm for weary souls. Few books of this type exist today and better words have never been written on this subject.

Relief for the Weary

This book is probably my most read and appreciated of any book I have. Lloyd Jones Scripturally and gently points out the causes of all our depression- and what a relief it is to find that someone else has known and experienced the very thing that we are struggling with! He then moves on to why, and how you can oversome what your difficulty is- giving all the glory and putting all your hope in Christ. Another of the greatest bonus' of this book is that you don't feel as if you're reading some mans opinion; there is so much Scripture infused throughout, a sense more of finally taking and truly applying the living word of God is experienced. Lloyd-Jones takes all the most common ailments of depressed Christians; feelings, guilt, lack of faith, and trials, and compassionatly exhorts you to find your way out through belief. Calvin says "We are all partly unbelievers throughout our lives", and Martin Lloyd-Jones lights the way out of this particular area of stumbling. He puts it perfectly in the chapter "Feelings"- "I cannot make myself be happy, but I can remind myself of my belief. I can address my soul as the psalmist does in Ps.42 'Why art thou cast down, O my soul, and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou'...believe thou, trust thou. That is the way."
