Translation of the novelization for the French serial

Once again, Black Coat Press presents a translation for one of the novelizations for a character they have been using in their Tales of the Shadowmen series. This time is "Belphegor" the so-called "Phantom of the Louvre". As far as I know, the movie serial this is based is not available on DVD.

They've used this mysterious character before, and now we can read the original story. The author was trying to create a character that could rival Fantomas or Judex (the later of which he co-created).

This would also spawn a later tv series (the cover is taken from that series) and a more recent movie version as well, tho these made changes in the characters. The extras in this book include synopsis of that 1965 tv remake, along with the comic book sequel that followed, as well as reprints of some of the covers to the book versions that have come out over the years.

"Belphegor" is the name of an ancient demon (not a god). The main villain of the story, the "Phantom of the Louvre" (also called Belphegor), is searching for a hidden treasure of the kings of France that is connected to the statue of Belphegor located in the Louvre. Opposing him are 2 characters. One is Chantecoq, originally created by Bernede as a French secret agent, now turned detective (he's called the "king of detectives") who appeared in other stories by the author before and after this work. The other is the journalist Bellegarde, who seems to be based on the classic French journalist/adventurer Rouletabille (Black Coat Press has reprinted 2 of his classic stories).

Other characters include the daughter of Chantecoq (who didn't appear in the other works of this character), Bellegarde's fiance Simone Desroches, Police Inspector M�nardier, the Baron Papillon (his chateau is used in the climax of the story) & his wife, and a sinister hunchback. Adding to the plot, we have a love triangle between Bellegarde, Simone, and Chantecoq's daughter, all of whom Belphegor menaces. Both Chantecoq and Menardier are trying to unmask Belphegor as rivals.

The original story was serialized, then published in 4 volumes, later collected into a single volume and reprinted several times. Interesting, between the original serialization and being collected, several passages (and in one case a whole chapter) were dropped. They have been restored in this edition as footnotes.

Clear and concise

If Market Profile is the context you choose to use when defining tradeable market structure then this is the book for you.

I've read every MP book available, here's a list of them.

This particular book is easy to read and concise in its explanation of MP concepts. It will stay with me, not because I define market structure by the statistical bell curve, but because I have gleaned ideas and concepts from Market Profile that I now call my own. I am one third through the book and am totally impressed with its layout and format. I will add to this review when I have completed the book.

New Update (Jun.03,2012): I'm more than halfway through now, sorry for taking my time!! Still wonderful!! Extreme clarity when explaining different MP day types and beautiful presentation of split profile and combined profile!! A wonderful teacher. This is the right man to explain MP concepts. Would recommend this as the only MP book necessary to understand its physical attributes but its theory is still best understood by first reading "Markets And Market Logic" and then secondly by reading "141 West Jackson". I will add more as I read further!!

New Update (Jun.25,2012): The next territory the book then enters is into describing the importance of understanding the flow of volume. He concentrates first on the value of recognizing the important areas of the volume profile and then heads directly into the footprint chart. By using the footprint chart the author tries to teach us an understanding of the importance of tracking imbalance between the bid and the ask over traditional 30 minute sections of time through the RTH, over the range of price covered in that period of time. Next he introduces comparative value area tracking of 30 min segments, trying to define trend by the movement of these 30 min value area segments.
The next section moves into an indicator he has developed called the KVT. He basically created it to inform him of what is abnormally large volume for anytime of the day. By doing so I would guess he is attempting to discern institutional activity by tracking large volume and perhaps an imbalance in the bid/ask at the same time. Seems useful!! Will continue when I've finished the book.

New Update (July 21, 2012)The book ends with the author stating the usefulness of MP in the stock and forex markets and a short introduction to trading it using well known indicators such as the MACD.
All in all this book is the new standard set for the clearest introduction to Market Profile concepts. I do hope the author writes another on trading concepts involving MP, as it would surely add clarity to the field. This is a good buy and a definite keeper!!

May be useful for completely noobs, skip it if you have studied Dalton's book(s)

If you have studied Dalton's "Mind Over Markets" (and/or Dalton's "Markets in Profile"), you can safely skip this book, there is no new insights in MP that were not already covered in great length in Dalton's books, except for some very basic introductions to footprint charts and other stuff that really are optional or non-essential to MP, one can easily find better materials in these "other stuff" through MarketDelta's reference resources (MarketDelta is a charting software company whose software MarketDelta is used for producing the charts in this book).

I am a retail trader who is currently exclusively using MP based methodologies in my trading, I first studied Steidlmayer's book in 2003, and I have also studied extensively all the MP related tittles listed in first poster's list. For beginners, I recommend Dalton's "Mind Over Markets" in stead of this book.

A word of caution: don't expect to master the MP based trading approach in a short time and by reading just one or few books, it would take YEARS to master this approach, no matter how smart you think you are and how much experience you have in trading, this is not a cup of tea, but once mastered, it is extremely useful and effective, few ever reach the level of mastery (take my words with a grind of salt of course, you should with anybody's words).

I was new to the subject of Market Profile. This book helped me understand the concepts pretty well.

As the book explained, market profile does not give buy/sell signals. However, the book also stated that market profile can be used to improve trade result / fine tuning entry/exit/stop.

It would be nice to include actual trade examples on how this can be accomplished. Including entry/exit/stop data on specific instrument on specific trades.

Helped me understand the full Drug Discovery landscape and gain overall perpective

I work as an account manager in the Life Sciences vertical of an ITES organisation. I have been in the system for quite some time and had gained understanding of some of the key Pharmaceutical business fucntion.

This book particularly helped me to understand the full landscape and gain overall perpective. I would recommend this to anyone who has some or no business function knowledge and is wanting to consolidate. I would also recommend you to note down the points that are of interest to you and weave them in your own Pharma story.

I have now picked up Manual of Drug Safety And Pharmacovigilance. I am hoping this book would be as interesting as the earlier one.

I have a chem/biochem background and am about to finish my PhD. This book was great help for preparing for interviews in the pharmaceutical industry. Especially if you do not know anything about drug development, clinical trials and GxP regulations it is worth the money!

Good technical look at sub design

The guy who didn't like this book must not have read anything other than the back cover. I used this book when studying for engineering quals on the USS Albuquerque, and it was of great assistance to me. It does have some flaws, which would mainly be an issue for people with no exposure to naval engineering. That being said, it's readable enough that anyone can learn quite a bit about submarine design. The discussions on hull shape,drag, and propulsion alone are worth the price.

Th Human Brain Versus the NHL

This is a book that should be stocked not only by every bookstore that puts hockey books on its shelves but by any sporting goods store that sells hockey equipment. I wish the author had plugged away at finding a major publisher because this book deserves one. It's both exceptionally well written and exceptionally timely.

The book quotes the great center for the Montreal Canadiens Jean Beliveau: "You can play this game perfectly and never intentionally hurt anybody." Therein lies the deterioration of hockey civility, irrespective of today's higher calibre of play. Today's NHL features all kinds of players whose raison d'etre is to hurt opposing players so badly that they'll not only be out of the game, they'll be out like a light and even out for the rest of the season. And sometimes it's a Sid Crosby or a Wayne Gretsky lying on the ce. That mentality was foreign to the old NHL. It did not glorify players whose only skills were fighting and brutal body checking. Now, as even former big bad Bruin turned hockey commentator Mike Milbury puts it, "There's six or seven players every shift now who don't care about the puck." In the 1960s, such a statement would be unintelligible. How could ANY hockey player not care about the puck? Sadly, it wouldn't surprise any fan today. Gowdey traces the evolution of this mentality and how an increasing incidence of concussions has accompanied it. He is not to be accused of wanting to convert the NHL to a gentler European style of play. He mostly just wants to reduce NHL barbarism to a bare minimum. The whole idea that the NHL should tolerate a much higher rate of brain injury than is inevitable is appalling. (Oh, sorry, it's just the brain. I thought we were talking about an important human organ.)

Gowdey makes clear that the problem is not illegal hits. The problem is mostly legal hits that should be illegal. Rule 48 was supposed to eliminate nasty head shots, but it can't work because it's couched in too many qualifiers. Skating lawyers, not referees, would be required to interpret and apply this rule effectively. Head shots should simply not be permitted--period, no qualifiers. And why not rehabilitate old rules that are seldom invoked anymore such as those penalizing charging or deliberate intent to injure?

The game is too fast and the players too big to avoid unacceptable rates of concussion under current rules. What is particularly horrible is that the vast majority of concussions happen without the drama of a player getting knocked out, which at least alerts everyone to the seriousness of what just took place. And the effects of minor concussions are cumulative. It's an insidious problem.

How can players with real hockey skills function at anywhere near their best when they know that they may very well be clobbered by the on-ice equivalent of a Brinks armored truck after they make a pass, even seconds later? So many bona fide hockey stars have had their seasons punctuated with injuries that were very much intended by goons or have had their careers thereby shortened. The excessive violence hurts and demeans the game as a spectacle. Apart from the pleasure of seeing an expansion team win the Stanley Cup mostly with sensational goaltending, who wants to revive the likes of Philadelphia's Broad Street bullies, as opposed to the likes of real hockey-playing teams such as the late 1970s Montreal Candiens?

Gowdey's arguments are more sophisticated and more charitable to Don Cherry types than what I've extracted above in broad strokes. And he embeds them within historical developments that many fans are probably not aware of. Most fans, unlike myself, continue to watch the game despite the barabarism. Count Gowdey amongst the optimists who continue to watch, partly in the hope of identifying what needs to be changed and then arguing passionately for such changes. Gowdey's passion for the game of hockey comes through loud and clear, and that's why even defenders of the status quo should listen up. Moreover: it's not a long book. It can easily be read over a weekend.

NHL....Wake Up!!!

The author takes a nostalgic look at hockey history and winds it through to the present. Along the way, he discusses the evolution of checking and why concussions have become so much more commonplace. The science of concussions is presented in an easy to understand way and the book doesn't get bogged down with medical jargon. The book is presented in such a way that the point is made, but not at the author's risk of coming across as a one who longs for the days of old. A super read for any hockey fan, athlete or parent.

About the Author
Earl Swokowski authored multiple editions of numerous successful textbooks, including CALCULUS; CALCULUS OF A SINGLE VARIABLE; FUNDAMENTALS OF COLLEGE ALGEBRA; and PRECALCULUS: FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS, all published by Cengage Learning Brooks/Cole.

Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

A Must Have book!

I am an adult returning to collage at 59. As you may imagine and higher math training I received has long been forgotten. The fast pace teaching was leaving me without a clue as to what I needed to do in this course. While the text book had answers to the odd questions, with out an explanation of how they were obtained they weren't much use. When I went to school way back then we didn't study algebra, so I wasn't up to speed in the subject as were the younger students just out of high school. This companion to the text book has the odd answers and how they were done, along with explanations. If you are having a hard time you need this book.

Wouldn't take pre-calc without it

All of the odd problems worked out, step by step.

The formatting isn't pretty, but I don't care.

I used this book (11th edition), with my 12th edition text book. Out of my assigned homework, I found only two problems that were different between the two.

By Algebra Woes
The solutions manual is helpful yet can be confusing bcause the manual teaches you the long way which could sometimes prove to be confusing. It is best to understand the formulas first and then use the manual as a cross check to verify that the final solution is correct.
