About Faces: Physiognomy in Nineteenth-Century Britain, by Sharrona Pearl

When nineteenth-century Londoners looked at each other, what did they see, and how did they want to be seen? Sharrona Pearl reveals the way that physiognomy, the study of facial features and their relationship to character, shaped the way that people understood one another and presented themselves.

Physiognomy was initially a practice used to get information about others, but soon became a way to self-consciously give information―on stage, in print, in images, in research, and especially on the street. Moving through a wide range of media, Pearl shows how physiognomical notions rested on instinct and honed a kind of shared subjectivity. She looks at the stakes for framing physiognomy―a practice with a long history―as a science in the nineteenth century.

By showing how physiognomy gave people permission to judge others, Pearl holds up a mirror both to Victorian times and our own.

Review
Although this book is clearly a cultural history of Victorian Britain, the resonances of physiognomy with current preoccupations and events are poignant. With pervasive concerns about the alleged invisible threats in our midst, any technology or idea, old or new, that promises to reveal those threats tends to carry weight. As Pearl rightly concludes, the promise of establishing reliable links between appearance and underlying reality was played for high stakes--and still is. (Alan Collins Times Higher Education Supplement 2010-04-15)

Pearl's book is a brilliant and original contribution to the history of visual culture. It bodes well for the career of a young scholar whose questions are difficult and whose answers are compelling. (Sander L. Gilman Bulletin of the History of Medicine 2011-01-01)

In this smart, engaging book, Sharrona Pearl shows that we can see Victorian culture through new eyes if we learn to look, as the Victorians did, with a physiognomic sensibility. Actors, criminals, the insane, rushed Londoners, Irish, Jews: all came to be categorized in this new form of gaze. Pearl's inventive and expansive About Faces recreates for us this most protean of nineteenth-century sciences. (Peter Galison, Harvard University)

This is a masterful study of how the Victorians came to see each other and themselves. Sharrona Pearl's witty, incisive, and pathbreaking book uses 'physiognomy'--the scientific study of faces--to tell us about the ways that the nineteenth-century British understood their rapidly changing social world, one face and glance at a time. (Alison Winter, author of Mesmerized: Powers of Mind in Victorian Britain)

About the Author
Sharrona Pearl is Assistant Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication of the University of Pennsylvania.

Review
The publisher Michael Grossrubatscher is a graduated engineer and airline pilot. His book is mainly aimed at the professional pilot but the content serves basically any aviation enthusiast who wants to know 'how it works'. The book comes in a handy A5 format and should fit easily into a crewbag or laptop case. If you are preparing for an upcoming interview, the book will help you to refresh your knowledge on Aerodynamics, Engines, Performance, Design, Navigation, Weather and Human Performance. Besides, it is also a great source for any pilot to keep up her/his knowledge on the above mentioned topics. The text is illustrated with many graphics, helping you to understand and memorize what you read more easily. Looking up a specific topic is simple. A keyword index will take you straight to the page you are looking for. Topics are well covered and avoid going into too much details unrelevant to the pilot. The presented material is all you need too know at an interview or if asked by a check pilot. I personally found the information on performance, weather and aerodynamics very helpful as they are explained thoroughly but in an easy-to-understand way. The book is so far the best I have seen if you want to refresh your ATPL knowledge, whether it is just for yourself or because you prepare for an interview respectively check. --flitework.com

Avoid, if possible.
By Fred Woodbridge
I got this book expecting to get some great information in summary format. I was disappointed and had to return it. The quality of the ebook is atrocious, starting with the graphics which are barely visible. The other let down was sentence structure and grammar: I believe the author is German. It seems whoever must have done the translation was doing so word for word which makes for some strange, run-on sentences.
The author provides no idea of what basic knowledge is required, but it is clear from reading on that he expects a good grasp of analytical geometry and algebra. In addition, the reader is going to be tackling information related to high-performance aircraft such as jets. Your average General Aviation pilot will be getting little out of that. Coupled with what will feel like rapid-fire machine gun coverage of topics in a very condensed format (I'm not kidding, most topics are one huge chunk of data with no paragraph breaks), I'm going to give this one an Avoid, if possible.

Amazon.com Review
Mired in poverty, the student Raskolnikov nevertheless thinks well of himself. Of his pawnbroker he takes a different view, and in deciding to do away with her he sets in motion his own tragic downfall. Dostoyevsky's penetrating novel of an intellectual whose moral compass goes haywire, and the detective who hunts him down for his terrible crime, is a stunning psychological portrait, a thriller and a profound meditation on guilt and retribution.

From Publishers Weekly
An acclaimed new translation of the classic Russian novel.

“This fresh, new translation…provides a more exact, idiomatic, and contemporary rendition of the novel that brings Fyodor Dostoevsky’s tale achingly alive…It succeeds beautifully.” –San Francisco Chronicle

“Reaches as close to Dostoevsky’s Russian as is possible in English…The original’s force and frightening immediacy is captured…The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation will become the standard English version.”–Chicago Tribune

Amazon needs to start recognizing the difference in translations
By Daniel J. Moriarty
This is not the version of the book I clicked on! When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett.

This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle.

It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.

Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

This is an ebook -- period!
By Puppy Cat
This is just an ebook -- like all the other ebooks. The story itself is a classic. BUT there is no "free audiobook" included. You are directed to a website, which directs you to another website -- which I didn't even bother going to. I just deleted the whole thing.

By J.K. Turner
My Rating –Put it on the List

Level – Tough, dense, fairly long

Summary
Rodion (Rody) Romnovich Raskolnikov is a poor college student in St. Petersburg who decides to murder an old pawnbroker with an ax so that he can rob her. Things go awry when someone else is there and he has to kill them both. Though he believes he had the right to kill her, comparing himself to Napoleon, claiming that murder is alright if it serves a higher purpose, he becomes obsessed with his actions. He goes into a near psychotic state, becoming not entirely sure of what is real and what isn't.

His friend Razumikhin tries to help him, giving him work to do and visiting him, as well as calling on a doctor to see him. Meanwhile, me is suspected and interviewed about the murder. Additionally, his mother and sister are moving to the area for his sister to marry a wealthy man, all for him. The man will be able to help with pay for school as well as help him get set up with a job. During one of his frantic bouts, he sees a man get run over in the street and follows the crowd as the bring the body home, offering to pay for the funeral. He ends up meeting the man's daughter, whom he falls in love with.

My Thoughts
Two things made this hard to read for me. For one, as always, I was using the Dover Thrift edition, which might not always be the best translation. Secondly, the Russian naming convention of calling them by first and last name but then alternately calling them by just one name, but a different one from the other two. It took me awhile to figure out Razumikhin and Dmitry Prokofyich Vrazumikhin was just one person.

I have the Dover Thrift (of course) which is the Constance Garnett translation. From what I’ve read, the best is Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation, though it seem a bit harder to find. Many others enjoy this version, newly released Crime and Punishment: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) (this is also the version you'll see if you follow Rodion on Twitter)

(Edit – I came across the naming custom in an article about War & Peace, which is had seen it prior to reading. You can read the whole article, but below are the main highlights)

The common rules are the further:

the full three-name form (for instance, Иван Иванович Петров, Ivan Ivanovich Petrov) is used in official documents only. Everyone in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus is supposed to have three names.
the form "first name + patronymic" (for instance, Иван Иванович, Ivan Ivanovich):
is the feature of official communication (for instance, students in schools and universities call their teachers in the form of "first name + patronymic" only);
may convey the speaker's respect for the recipient. Historically patronymic was the feature of the royal dynasty only (Рюриковичи, Ruerikovichi)
the surname only (Петров, Petrov) is used in formal communications, but much more rare. One instance where it is used commonly is by school teachers towards their students. There's some trend in informal Russian to call a recipient with his/her surname expressing the irony as well.
for informal communication two names are usually omitted and only the first name is used (for instance, Иван, Ivan). In the more informal registers, a diminutive(of which several can be formed from one name) is often used. In rural areas the patronymic name only (for instance, Петрович, Petrovich, Ивановна, Ivanovna) is used by aged people for informal communication between themselves, sometimes young people use such form expressing the irony.
The book started off slow, so if you are willing to power through the first 45 pages and cruise on past 70 pages, you’ll be good to go. Probably he most interesting and entertaining sections are his conversations with inspector Porfiry Petrovich. The whole book has many story lines, however almost all revolve around Rodion, so it is not too hard to follow. Towards the end of the book, you can see what is happening, but are still left wondering somewhat, about how everything will tie back together. It is a masterfully written story.

One of the most compelling parts of the book is Rodion's inner turmoil. In this aspect, the story of his mind is written as almost a psychological thriller. Dostoyevsky also plums the depths of the broken and guilt ridden mind. Rodion is near manic in his despair and belief in himself. It is almost disturbing to read.

Anyone looking to break into Russian Literature, this is definitely a good place to start and a book to put on your list. At around 500 pages it is the shortest of the Russian heavy weights. I certainly plan to continue you on with more, though I'm torn between sticking with Dostoyevsky or moving on to Tolstoy. Either way, check back for a review in the future.

Portofino, by Frank Schaeffer

Some kids told lies to be special. Calvin told lies to be normal. The son of a missionary family, he looks forward all year to summer vacation in Portofino--especially since he'll once again have the chance to see his beloved Jennifer. But even in this seductive seaside town in Italy, the Beckers can't really relax. Calvin's father could slip into a Bad Mood and start hurling potted plants at any time. His mother has an embarrassing habit of trying to convert "pagans" on the beach. And his sister keeps a ski sweater and miniature Bible in her luggage just in case the Russians invade and send them to Siberia. Dad says everything is part of God's plan. But this summer, Calvin has some plans of his own. From the author of Saving Grandma, this delightful coming-of-age novel will bring a smile of recognition to anyone who's ever been embarrassed by their parents.

If you grew up fundamentalist and no longer are you can identify
By Amazon Customer
Identifying with Calvin Becker in Portofino is easy for those who grew up fundamentalist, but are no longer in that particular camp. I recall a conversation with a cousin a couple of years ago which detailed the same kinds of experiences Calvin had. Since I grew up only half fundamentalist (mother was father wasn't) I was spared some of Calvin's angst, but was subjected to other types (my father was obviously among the "unsaved.")

I have appreciated Frank's work from the days when he was known as Franky. A lot of people associate his father with the sort of fundamentalist preacher that is portrayed in Portofino, but actually Francis Schaeffer encouraged his son to watch Fellini films and encouraged his forays into film making. Francis Schaeffer was outspoken against the list mentality in fundamentalism (see True Spirituality). It was Francis and Edith Schaeffer who encouraged many of my generation of fundamentalists to be more open to culture. I think that to assume that the Beckers are merely loosely fictionalized Schaeffer's is to not pay attention to things that Frank himself has written about his parents as well as things that Edith and Susan have revealed about the family. Francis Schaeffer once said that if we expect perfection or nothing we will get nothing. He would have hated a hagiography of his life. Towards the end of his life he was as distressed as his son at the direction that evangelical Christianity was moving in.

It certainly is amusing to see how Frank has taken his father's temper tantrums (documented by Edith) in which a flower pot routinely got thrown and encorporated it into the fictional character of Rev. Becker. I'm sure that there are pieces of his mother there as well (although I suspect that his maternal grandmother may be more to the point - since I never saw Edith in action I can't be certain of that). He even pokes fun at himself since he was a late reader.

Frank certainly got to see plenty of fundamentalist families like the Beckers as he was growing up. It certainly appears his mother grew up in one (his grandather wrote an empassioned tract on minced oaths - darn for damn was no better and also earned a mouth full of soap). His caricature of fundamentalism rings more true than a lot of people would suspect. However, Frank didn't grow up to reject Christianity. He found his way into a more historical form of Christian faith in the Greek Orthodox church.

Nearly every branch of Christianity (even I suspect the Orthodox) have pietists in their midst. Nearly every branch of Christianity has those believers who don't appreciate art, music, or literature that isn't explicitly proselytizing. Nearly every branch of Christianity also has believers who realize that art isn't necessarily about proselytizing. Much Ado About Nothing, Chaucer's Miller's Tale, Flannery O' Connor's Wise Blood, were all written by believing Christians, but they are all classed as great literature and are read with appreciation by people who don't share their author's faith.

You can read Portofino as a former fundamentalist and nod knowingly. You can read it as a non-believer and have it reinforce your ideas about fundamentalists. You can even read it as a fundamentalist and have it challenge your ideas about how to convey your faith to your kids and the world around you. The Beckers truly want to share their faith, they really do care about the lost. They simply have been handicapped by some of their subcultural baggage. Maybe what they really needed to do was go to L'Abri???

I think that people who have appreciated the Schaeffer's encouragement to reject the list mentality and appreciate good art will find Portofino an interesting read. I think those who simply found in Schaeffer an ally for their right wing politics (he actually wasn't as much of an ally as they think) and appreciated him for his strong stand for the Bible may find Portofino uncomfortable. But the people who find Portofino uncomfortable probably weren't happy that Francis Schaeffer was encouraging students from Christian colleges to view Satyricon back in the late 60's. Frank's work is not his father's, he isn't just a chip off the old block. But to see him as simply a son who has totally rejected his parents is to misread the situation, at least it seems so to me as I read Frank's work, Edith's work, and Susan's work.

In the final analysis Portofino is a wickedly funny book and a lovely look at an Italy that I would love to see (I suspect it is now covered with Golden Arches and Ben and Jerry's).

I'm looking forward to reading the last book in the trilogy and Frank's new military books.

Like a script of my childhood
By Luke T. Evans
This novel reads like a script of my childhood. My family never went to exotic locations like Portofino, but I lived this very same life and heard these same words. Even if you didn't have these types of experience and thus cannot directly relate, this is still a great little novel in it's own right. It is well-written and entertaining. Too bad the movie was never made. It would have been a good one. Highly recommended.

Fantastic
By C. Kevin Smith
"Portofino" is a story about a boy's annual summer vacation with his family, headed by two alarmingly religious yet all-too human parents. This coming-of-age tale wrapped me around its little finger on Page One and did not let go until the very end, which came much too quickly. I bought it at an airport bookstore and read most of it during a short flight, finishing it (instead of unpacking) when I got home. Schaeffer has drop-dead perfect pitch for the rhythms of family life, which he captures in warm, compassionate, and seamless storytelling prose. I especially appreciated the way he blends family humor and pain (even abuse) into a uniquely personal yet totally universal mood of adolescent yearning. This book is poignant and incredibly funny (my frequent guffaws had people turning heads on the plane) and I would recommend it to anyone who loves to get pulled into a book you can't put down until you're done.

Well-Being (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Ben Bradley

The concept of well-being plays a central role in moral and political theory. Policies and actions are justified or criticized on the grounds that they make people better or worse off. But is there really such a thing as well-being, and if so, what is it? Is it pleasure, desire-satisfaction, knowledge, virtue, achievement, some combination of these, or something else entirely? How can we measure well-being, amongst individuals and society? And how can we use it to make moral judgements about people, policies and institutions?

In this entertaining and accessible new book, Ben Bradley guides readers through the various philosophical theories of well-being, such as hedonism, perfectionism and pluralism, showing the benefits and drawbacks of each theory. He explores the role of well-being in moral and political theory, and the limitations of welfare-based approaches to ethics such as utilitarianism and welfare egalitarianism. Finally, he introduces puzzles about well-being that arise in moral and prudential deliberations about procreation and death.

Well-Being is an ideal introduction to these topics for those with no philosophical background, or for philosophers looking for an overview of current thinking about the subject.

Thirty Frames Per Second: The Visionary Art of the Music Video, by Steve Reiss, Neil Feineman

Music videos have radically changed the way we look at the world. Instantly accessible on a global scale, these revolutionary videos have reflected and influenced popular culture, fashion, sports, advertising, art, cinema, television, and new media -- as well as music itself.Thirty Frames Per Second is the first book to showcase the artistic vision of the music video director. What began two decades ago as little more than a marketing tool showing a band's stage performance has now become a director's medium of expression and experimentation. Spike Jonze, Peter Care, Kevin Kerslake, Mark Romanek, and David Fincher are among the 55 top directors featured -- many of whom have come from backgrounds in film, advertising, photography, fine art, or architecture, and some of whom have gone on to make feature films. Nearly 400 stills, culled from the most compelling and influential videos, make this visually stimulating survey of the genre a powerful testament to a brashly innovative contemporary art form.

From Booklist
Reiss and Feineman's luxuriously illustrated book is a sort of meditation on the question, "Is music video an art form?" It is full of the quirky camera angles, arresting colors, and arty atmosphere of both music videos and those Calvin Klein commercials featuring brooding young models, frequently in dishabille. It opens with generally fawning critiques of leading music-video directors, which, printed in tiny type, seem rather an afterthought, definitely intended to take a backseat to the lavish graphics. So get it for the glamorous pix, and acquire some questionable genre criticism on the side. That genre, by the way, is basically the rock video, and there is nary a hint of the cowboy-hats-and-fringe ambience of country music videos. A note of caution is, perhaps, necessary: there is some gratuitous nudity herein, but it is quite tasteful and perfectly in context. Again, think Calvin Klein commercials, with a soft "R" rating, as opposed to the approximately hard "PG" for television. And remember--this is ART. Mike Tribby

Overlooked No More!!
By David Iskra
The video is an amazingly overlooked artform. Sure there are plenty of bad throw-away videos made daily, but there are others not so forgettable. This book not only acknowledges that fact, but does a great job of convincing the reader. From Bjork to U2 several artists are known for thier innovation and creativity not only in the recording studio but in the film studio as well. The book does not forget the directors behind these visions. If you look at the names you will see a cross reference of visual artists, fashion photographers big name movie directors and soon-to-be movie directors. 33 frames is a visual treat to look at for both the music fan, photog-lover and coffee book collector. ake a look!.

a design masterpiece
By Eric F. Pinczower
If you love the art of music video - you must buy this book. Just think of all the books written on movies and this really is the first to appreciate the music video as an artform. Even if you are not a music video fan - the images are simply spectacular and the design a masterpiece. Steve Reiss is clearly a rising star of design. A must for video buffs, photography buffs or design buffs.

Exelent book
By C. Balslev
This book includes hundreds of stills from videos, from various artists, such as Chris Cunningham, Floria Sigismondi, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Samuel Bayer and Anton Corbijn!!! It also gives you a short description on how these talented people got into the the music video buisness. If you have just a little interrest in music videos/Commercials or photography, this book is a must.
It includes forword by the autheur and an interview with Michael Stipe, on how Videos has influenced REM...
Its hard to find any information about music video/directors, but this book mentions all of them( allmost!).
If you want to see more, I highly recomend Floria Sigismondis Redemption, and Mark Romaneks Music Video Stills
