In "Marijuana & Hemp: History, Uses, Laws, and Controversy," John McCabe details the history of the human relationship with the cannabis plant, including as a crop grown for its fiber, oil, and seed, and as a plant bred for use as a recreational drug. Throughout history the plant has been used for food, fabric, paper, cordage, fuel, insulation, building materials, resin, and a slew of other uses. McCabe clarifies the difference between the non-drug plant known as "industrial hemp" and the relative plant that gets people "high" and which is commonly known as "marijuana." Hemp fabric sails and rope are what allowed people to sail the oceans and establish naval fleets and global trade. Hemp paper was used in the earliest books, newspapers, and publications that educated people and played a role in revolutions. Hemp fabric has been used at clothing, tents, blankets, and other items for thousands of years. Currently the industrial hemp plant is unfairly tied in in laws relating to drugs and the Drug War. Throughout the book, McCabe quotes from scientific journals, government meetings and publications, historical texts, experts, and other sources to explain the confusion between hemp and marijuana. He details why industrial hemp needs to be legalized and why the drug laws need to be changed. It is a matter of protecting the environment, of wildlife survival, and of creating a more sustainable human culture free from restrictive drug laws that waste billions of dollars every year, endanger law enforcement workers and citizens, and destroy lives.

Disregard the previous review
By Mike Martel
It is obvious by the previous review that they did not read the book. First off Hemp cannot be reversed engineered to become the "demon weed" Marijuana. Yet this reviewer implies that. The author states in many places throughout the book that is not possible and that illicit growers don't want their crops anywhere near hemp because once they pollinate the marijuana plants it lowers the THC level in them. This reviewer is just doing their civic duty by again fear mongering and spreading misinformation about hemp. Say and believe that you want about Marijuana but there is no reason why industrial hemp is still illegal in this country to produce. Overall I like this book and find it informative and a good companion Chris Conway's Hemp:Lifeline to the Future. Read the book for your self and decide.

McCabe makes an excellent argument in favor of legalizing the harvesting of hemp ...
By Robert M. Thomas
John McCabe’s “Marijuana & Hemp” has made me realize how ignorant I was in regards to the mentioned subjects. The book is an eye opening, jaw dropping, and entertaining read that will certainly impress all whom absorb its extremely well researched contents. McCabe makes an excellent argument in favor of legalizing the harvesting of hemp on U.S. soil; as a secondary thought; he makes a strong case in support of decriminalizing Marijuana. Overall, the author exposes how corporate greed led to the prohibition of Hemp farming, and to how millions of tax dollars are wasted each year in an attempt to keep Marijuana from the general public. Granted there are a few “editing” mishaps, the book is highly educational and brings a much-needed awareness to the public at large.

Looking for objective information
By Mark S. Beier
I don't know if John McCabe's intention was to present objective information about the contentious issue of cannabis. If it was, he fell far short of this goal, which is unfortunate because unbiased, reliable information is difficult to find in this area. McCabe tries to temper his pro-legalization stance with a distinction between "hemp" and "marijuana." Unfortunately, no such distinction truly exists: seeds from the tall, fibrous, low-THC "hemp" plant can be grown under different conditions and within a couple of generations will be shorter, bushier, have higher THC concentrations and be called "marijuana."
McCabe is prone to irrelevant tangents, such as William Randolph Hearst's extra-marital affair and a brief history of Pancho Villa, that occasionally make him difficult to follow. Adding to the confusion, the book is poorly organized and the editing is poor.
This book is not devoid of good information. But, the reader must be aware that it is biased and largely in favor of cannabis, relies heavily on anecdotal evidence and any information garnered from it should be verified elsewhere before repeated by the reader as "fact." The legal status of cannabis as a medicine and a recreational drug has been an issue in America since the early 20th century (or earlier) and is not likely to be resolved anytime soon. In the meantime, we are still searching for an unbiased, reliable source of evidence-based information on which one could form a rational argument either in favor or against.
