A fresh and previously uncharted exploration of our educational system uncovers a clumsy and self-defeating “elephant in the room.” Our many failed attempts at reform make it clear that we’re not getting to the true, underlying sources of our difficulties. The book digs deeper than other reforms and reveals a self-destructiveness that may very well astonish you. This scientific and non-political analysis doesn’t criticize school boards, teachers unions, administrators, parents, students, vouchers or charter schools. No, the problem is in the system itself. The research focuses on: • Recognition of student differences. • Reassessment of high-stakes testing and grading systems. • Challenging the myth that all students should attend college. • Matching teaching to each student’s unique abilities. • Opening employment opportunities for all. • Showing how every child can succeed.

By J. A. Nannen
The Elephant in the Classroom blows the top off of the validity of a conventional public school education. Dr. Hicks cuts through everything to show us exactly why all kids should not be going on to college and he makes this truth obvious in 150 pages. He argues (and argues well) the indisputable truth that the manner in which we educate our children in the 21st century is not only poor, but harmful as well!
I see this book as 4 sections:
1. Proof that our current system teaches as if every student was going to college.
2. Why we should not be trying to educate all kids as if they were all going to college.
3. One fundamental change to the system that will make all the difference in the world and then quoting numerous sources and research projects to validate this change.
4. Getting the word out about how best to make that change.
The Elephant in the Classroom shows the reader exactly why teaching the way we do might prepare kids for college, but does not prepare them for enough if they don’t choose to continue their education. A better idea would be to have something similar to our conventional system (what Hicks calls a blended classroom) that takes the child through only the 5th grade.
From grade 6-8 he gives the option to the student of taking some courses that he calls career studies which would allow the student to study a career that he/she might find interesting.
Then, beginning in the 9th grade, all students would choose one of two tracks: advanced academic studies (AAS) for those planning on attending college or advanced career studies (ACS) for those choosing instead to learn a trade. Dr. Hicks also feels that a huge emphasis should be placed on the effort to get parental buy-in and involvement in both tracks of study, similar to what is done in the fundamental schools of today.
All in all a wonderful, well thought out plan that makes so much more sense than what we are doing today. This country could be unstoppable if this plan or something like it were implemented. We can only hope that The Elephant in the Classroom ends up in the hands of those that can help implement these changes.

Hicks' Best Effort Yet!
By Douglas James
You can tell that this is the culmination of Dr. Hicks’ work over the years resulting in the ground-breaking truth of what is wrong with our school system— very few of us should have spent 4 years in high school preparing for 4 years of college. This is well written and follows the trend of being factual and technical while reading like a novel. Hicks has a couple novels, some technical books on psychology and learning, and a book on why too much technology is bad for us, but this is his forte.
