Perfectly balancing science and spirituality

After attending an Omega Healing workshop with Dr Roy Martina, I was delighted to find that the book reflects Dr Martina's charm and wisdom perfectly; his humour shines through every page.

I particularly enjoyed Chapter 7 (Cell Memory) and Chapter 11 (Awareness) for personal reasons; the images in Chapter 8 - The 14 Gateways to Emotional Balance - are an excellent way to tap into the power of the Omega Healing process without having attended any of Dr Martina's workshops and start to feel the benefits for yourself.

With a background in medicine, Dr Martina is a rare breed - a holistic doctor who can share his knowledge in written form without bamboozling the reader who may be new to these ideas, as well as totally engage a reader with a serious interest in energy and healing. A truly delightful read and a great reference handbook; I'd also highly recommend purchasing the Emotional Balance meditations on CD too, as that really brings the whole experience together.

After attending Dr. Martina's workshops and listening to his audio recordings as well I greatly enjoyed and learnt about myself whilst reading this book - thoroughly for over 3 weeks and together with recommended practice I feel great results. I recommend attending Dr. Martina workshop/s to reinforce your well being and your closest in effect. His book draws upon well-known practices of chakras and acupressure points and adds completely unique new practical technique how to stay emotionally balanced so that you can start to connect with your inner potential of being happy - your divine. If it is your first time reading anything related to spiritual philosophies and the spiritual truth, then this may be a wonderful new beginning to find out about your personal sabotage of your own potential. Dr. Martina has a great sense of humour and offers you new practical views and lifelong experience from his practice. Trust it and Enjoy it.

The book is fantastic; it's a must have tool for people who decided to change their life and work on self improvement. I gave this book to one of my friends who is very sceptical about pretty much everything and to my surprise she is loving it. Decent book, light on substance

Mishkin delivers a serviceable, but not great book. In his rush to leave his post at the Fed, you would think he would create a more engaging book, or at least include more flesh on the financial crisis. His analysis is fairly shallow and his structure seems more geared towards a freshman/high school level class than a full fledge book for college students. Several errors in the book, including on page 428 where he definitely uses incorrect numbers from the FDIC.

That being said, as some of the material was new to me, this book provides a great, accessible overview of many concepts and structures in the financial world. The readings are a breeze, and most of the examples used are easy to grasp and understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an introduction to financial markets, but as a Economics and Business double major, I find it difficult to rate higher than 3 stars.

Missing Private Equity

This is a book about "Financial Institutions" and it does not discuss Private Equity firms! (as separated from Venture Capital firms). And it only discusses Venture Capital firms for a few pages. And as far as I can see, not a word about investment strategies: Levaraged Bouyots, Growth vs. Venture Capital, Mezzanine Capital, Distressed Investment.
In a book about financial institutions and their role on the financial markets, you would expect that a full chapter should be given to Investment Banking, a full chapter to Private Equity, a full chapter to Venture Capital firms, a full chapter to Angel Investing. Not in this book. Other than that, the book is written well.
Now I have to buy a book about more financial institutions.

About the Authors

Vickie A. Vaclavik is�an assistant professor, and registered dietitian at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, in the Department of Clinical Nutrition. She instructs in Food Science, and Management and Foodservice Operations, as well as in a portion of the community practice component of Nutrition Education. She also instructs in Nutrition at the Dallas County Community College, and works with a local Culinary Arts Associates Degree program. She has taught for over 20 years. As well, she has written Food Science texts and a computer module on food safety.

Elizabeth W. Christian is an adjunct faculty member of the Texas Woman's University's Department of Nutrition & Food Sciences.

About the Author
Thomas Hardy�(1840-1928) immortalized the site of his birth—Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester—in his writing. Delicate as a child, he was taught at home by his mother before he attended grammar school. At sixteen, Hardy was apprenticed to an architect, and for many years, architecture was his profession; in his spare time, he pursued his first and last literary love, poetry. Finally convinced that he could earn his living as an author, he retired from architecture, married, and devoted himself to writing. An extremely productive novelist, Hardy published an important book every year or two. In 1896, disturbed by the public outcry over the unconventional subjects of his two greatest novels—Tess of the D’Urbervilles�and�Jude the Obscure—he announced that he was giving up fiction and afterward produced only poetry. In later years, he received many honors. He was buried in Poet’s Corner, in Westminster Abbey. It was as a poet that he wished to be remembered, but today critics regard his novels as his most memorable contribution to English literature for their psychological insight, decisive delineation of character, and profound presentation of tragedy.

The Best Hardy Collection

If you are looking for a collection of Hardy's poetry, look no farther than this collection. The Penguin editors have done an incredible job of organizing the dense, complex body of Hardy's work into a very readable collection. This is more than just a simple "Hardy's greatest hits." Yes, there are the standard favorites here, but there is also an impressive collection of the writer's more obscure work. Reading the entire contents of this book is the best way to see the breadth of Hardy's existential and metaphysical angst.

After the Library of America edition of Robert Frost's poetry, this might be the best collection of poetry there is. Not only is Hardy one of the best poets ever (easily top five in the English language), but Mezey does a great job at putting together this collection. He selects the best of Hardy's poetry and a highly representative selection as well. His introduction is very well written and highly informative. It's like taking a quick class on Hardy. The poems are very much annotated, almost too much, but the notes are at the back of the book, so they are unobtrusive. There is a chronology and Mezey includes a few quotes, some of them quite witty, from Hardy. And all for an affordable price. You really can't beat this, and Hardy is one of those poets that should be on everyone's shelf.

"Emotion put into measure"

I commend this volume for three reasons. First and foremost for the 180 or so poems by Thomas Hardy (out of the approximately 950 he wrote). Among critics and self-professed serious students of English poetry, Hardy is often mildly disparaged as a poet. Yet among poets themselves, Hardy is/was admired and loved, even by "moderns" such as Pound, Jeffers, and Larkin.

Two aspects of Hardy's poetry stand out. One is his adherence to rhyme and meter. But Hardy is marvelously creative and diverse in his use of meter, his rhyming patterns, and the structure of his poems. He relies heavily on good old Anglo-Saxon words (many monosyllabic) and constructions. For those, like me, who often are uncomfortable with the free form and discursiveness of much modern poetry, Hardy is a welcome alternative. (The majority of the poems in this selection are less than twenty lines; very few are more than fifty.) The other conspicuous characteristic of Hardy's poetry is the somber atmosphere. The most common themes are death, the passage of time, nostalgia and regret. His poems are simple (few annotations are needed to read and understand them); they are more emotional than intellectual, more concrete than abstract; and they are very personal. Ultimately, then, THOMAS HARDY: SELECTED POEMS demonstrates a high degree of poetic craftsmanship and discipline and it constitutes a very moving body of work.

The second reason for commending this particular volume of Hardy's poems is Robert Mezey's Introduction and notes. At just over twenty pages, the Introduction is an ideal length. In it, Mezey succinctly makes his case for stating that "among the moderns", Hardy's "only peer is Frost and, perhaps, Yeats." One of the virtues of Hardy's poetry that Mezey identifies (and his selection confirms) is that with Hardy "the sense we get [is] that the moral and the aesthetic are rarely, if ever, separate things." The Introduction is learned, but it is not ivory tower: at one point Mezey compares a wonderful "song-like" rhyme in a Hardy poem with a rhyme from a Randy Travis song.

Lastly, this volume stands out for me for what it revealed of Thomas Hardy himself, that he was very decent and very human. I occasionally indulge myself by fantasizing about what it might have been like to spend an evening with a famous writer: of all famous writers, Thomas Hardy is one of those I most would have liked to have done so, and who (I sense) would have genuinely, without condescension, been interested in me.

One of several bonus features of the book is an Appendix containing miscellaneous comments Hardy made about poetry, writing, and life. Two of them seem worth sharing here:

"The business of the poet and novelist is to show the sorriness underlying the grandest things, and the grandeur underlying the sorriest things."

"Poetry is emotion put into measure. The emotion must come by nature, but the measure can be acquired by art."

After years - nay, decades - of reading only prose, I have resolved to expand my horizons (or, if you wish, deepen my soul) by reading poetry regularly - say about one book or collection each month. THOMAS HARDY: SELECTED POEMS proved to be an excellent beginning.
